Just today I went out to get a router to hook up my xbox360 and PC to my broadband connection. Unfortunately, my gadget heart started pumping and I walked out of the store with a Netgear 108mbps wireless router. Oooops!

So. Now I got my Qtek 8310 to load webpages through my wifi network, but I can't seem to find the setting to get Pocket MSN to do the same.

Where are the settings for this?

I have set internet to switch to my wifi network when im at "Work". Is there another way I should go about this?

Thanks for all help!

Please? :)

I don't know about Pocket MSN, but the issue is the same with Windows Mobile Live.

I asked the Live Team about why it didn't use my wifi connection, and this is the answer I got:

Current generation WiFi chips do not have a low power mode in which they can

still receive data. They are fine for downloading email or a web page etc

where the chip powers up, pulls down data and then powers down. They are

not so good for always connected push applications such as Messenger or

ActiveSync* which would need to keep the chip powered up so we can receive

incoming messages. Your battery would go flat VERY fast.

Implementation wise we tell the Connection Manager that we prefer

connections that supports wake on incoming data. GPRS is one such

connection, current generation WiFi is not. We will only use WiFi if you

do not have a GPRS connection configured.

I am told that there are new WiFi chips in the pipeline that solve this

problem and will support wake on incoming data while still consuming little

power. When such phones are available WLM should automatically make use of

it.

Strange. I have, however, read that people connect to the msn service through wifi. I just can't find the setting that makes my phone do so.

Any tips?

try disabling the phone function in the comm manager. it'll effectively force it to use WiFi. when connected simply turn the phone function back on ;)

Logging on to PocketMSN and Windows Live Mobile trough wi-fi works great with my Qtek 8300..

But can you explain what you mean here: "I have set internet to switch to my wifi network when im at "Work". Is there another way I should go about this?"?

OK, so maybe I got stuff a little mixed up. No need to taunt me.. :)

What I meant was I chose "Work" as my connection in IE. However my "Work" connection is set to automatic. So I dunno. I DO know though, that IE connects to my wifi, my msn doesn't.

If I switch to flight mode and try to connect msn gives me the "Temporary conditions currently prevent connecting..." message.

Has anybody here connected to msn through wifi on a Qtek 8310?

I tried to switch to flight mode now and enabled wi-fi. And I can log on with both PocketMSN and Windows Live Mobile beta. I've got a 8300, tough.. :( But my guess is that it should work for you too ;)

But one thing I thought of.. Since you're using "work" connection in IE, are your wifi connections configured as "work/private" connections?? All my wifi connections are configured as "internet" connections and show up together with my "GPRS" connections under "internet". In other words, I use "internet" connection for "everything" and I don't use "work" at all.. and everything works great. :D

When I used the old pocket MSN (looooong time ago :) ) it was fine using wifi when it was available, and if not, falling down to gprs.

Now with live messenger (beta version) it always tries to use GPRS, and only if I turn off the radio it uses WiFi. The internet connection in IE is set to "Internet", and IE works correctly (uses the right connection).

Anyway I find it ridiculous that they're worried more if the phone lasts less time when using WiFI, than if their program burns your traffic to an end due to continued gprs ping-pong (yes, even if disconnected from live it continues to transfer data every now & then)

I think they MUST give the user the choice of what connection to use.

Their "live!" idea of people being always connected everywhere they go, always in-sync with their contacts and feed is too "deep" for me (and for italy's average gprs costs).

I also noticed that when you start live messenger, it starts other services for a grand total of about 4-6mb of ram and you can't terminate them.

The only reliable way of using it was, as already said, disabling the radio and using it thru wifi, but i HOPE it's to be changed in the final release!!!

where did you ask that? e-mail address? are you signed in to the beta program?
