Guest AaronW Posted August 11, 2006 Report Posted August 11, 2006 OK, so I have direct pus set up on my Exchange 2003 server and set up my C600 using active sync but how does it actually work? Does my phone connect to my Exchange server every 5 mins and check for new mail? Does the Exchange server create a GPRS session to my number and tell my C600 there is new mail? Can someone who knows help me understand a bit better? Many thanks for your help. Aaron.
Guest danwatson1974 Posted August 11, 2006 Report Posted August 11, 2006 I am curious about this as well.. I think that there is a permanent GPRS session going on to connect the 'phone to the server, and any emails are pushed out to the device pretty much as soon as they are received - at least that's how it works on the Blackberry BES system and I assume it's a similar thing on WM5? I am sure that I read somewhere that people with certain versions of the C600 ROM also had to install a WM5 push email update before it would work properly...... Looking forward to hearing from someone who knows what they are talking about , 'cos all this push email stuff is a bit of a mystery to me .... I'm still happy with my M500 checking every 15 minutes or so for new mail :)
Guest jimbouk Posted August 11, 2006 Report Posted August 11, 2006 Direct push uses a live https connection between the exchange server and the phone. The phone initiates it and keeps it alive via a "heart beat" data pulse (approx 3bytes) every few minutes. Where the network is direct push friendly (and thus the devices IP address remains fairly constant) the datapulses drop to once every 45 mins or so (and thus data costs are very low). With the connection established, any changes at either end (ie a new mail on the server or the user entering a new appointment) and the device is made to initiate a sync. Purists reckon it is technically pull rather than push email as the server tells the device to sync (and thus pull the mail) when it has new mail. With Orange's data network the devices IP addresses are constantly changing to the datpulses dont get through and the device basically initiates a sync if it or the server sense that the live connection has dropped. As long as you have exchange server2003 sp2 (or rent an exchange service such as 4smartphone) you can have directpush mail.
