Removing the Comms Manager / Screen Rotate icons from SPVM600 Today Screen

Is there a way to remove the icons at the bottom of the today screen on the SPVM600 and in doing so free up space for other more important things? I have both items remapped to hardware keys anyway, so i really don't need them on screen.

Remove the "inittray.lnk" or very similar from \Windows\Startup and soft reset

I've just tried this but it didn't remove the screen orientation icon. In fact I removed everything from windows\startup and its still there. Any ideas? Thks
