Guest britboy Posted August 19, 2006 Report Posted August 19, 2006 Hey everyone, This is my first post. I bought my vario a few days ago and everything is working great except for my email. I have 2 POP3 Gmail accounts set up (I have not used outlook at all), I have no problem sending and receiving emails but when i receive an email it stays in my inbox for a few minutes and then automatically deletes and is nowhere to be found. I have checked every possible phone setting, the help feature and scoured the internet..I am also sure that it is nothing to do with my computer Gmail account as I have it set to save a copy of the message in the inbox after it has been downloaded to the device..also I have not accessed my computer Gmail during the entire time that I have been having these problems. Would anyone be so kind as to offer some possible solutions or reasons why this may be happening, I have been trying to figure it out on my own for 2 days and its driving me crazy! Thanks so much
Guest hotphil Posted August 21, 2006 Report Posted August 21, 2006 just a thought - how have you got the account configured on the handset in relation to which messages to download? is it All or Last 3 Days etc? if so, does that explain why some messages fail to appear?

I just have it set to show all messages that have been downloaded..I mean I havent checked the box that says "only show messages from the last _ days" Could that be something to do with it? Can I ask if you use Gmail?
Guest danwatson1974 Posted August 21, 2006 Report Posted August 21, 2006 Have you set it to check for emails every xx minutes? if so, could it be displaying only new messages, then, when it looks again and finds no new messages , displays an empty inbox? That probably doesn't make sense ... what i suppose i mean is, have you tried telling it not to check automatically, to see how long the messages remain in your inbox?

I have tried that, what seems to happen is that it will check for new emails and then deletes the oldest email in my inbox even if there are no new messages to download. The longest that ANY email has remained in my vario inbox is under an hour. I honestly feel like I'm losing my mind, I went to tmobile today and exchanged the handset so its clearly something to so with the settings or gmail but i have tried every possible combination and still it keeps deleting my emails. Can anyone give me any other advice? right now I'm at the point where I never want to see a vario again, I might just go and trade it in for something else..I can't take much more!
Guest Happy Dave Posted August 21, 2006 Report Posted August 21, 2006 I've got a similar problem but with my 'work' email, it logs on checks for messages and then shows and empty inbox even though i know theres mail there. My ISP pOP and hotmail all work correctly though. With work I'm assuming its an exchange setting wrong somewhere even though its checking via POP
Guest wolfe Posted August 22, 2006 Report Posted August 22, 2006 Hello everyone, What is going on is simple - but potentially hard to work around. Specifically, each time that the email client is going to check for new email, the email client tries to REMOVE any old emails (emails that the email client deturmines are no longer on your POP3 server) from your POP3 inbox. Unfortunately, gmail seems to be "telling" the handset's email client that there are ONLY the new emails in your gmail Inbox. Try going into your gmail account settings (Settings | Forwarding and POP), and in the POP Download section, set the second option (When messages are accessed with POP) to "Keep Gmail's copy in the Inbox" See if that makes your behavior any better, and post the results! Cheers, John Wolfe
Guest Monolithix (MVP) Posted August 22, 2006 Report Posted August 22, 2006 Welcome back John! Not seen you around these parts for a while :D
Guest marcwic Posted August 28, 2006 Report Posted August 28, 2006 This is a Gmail issue. When an email is retrieved, gmail deletes it from the POP server (but not from your web mail account) Workaround - use yahoo.co.uk (or another POP service) email instead. If you dont want to change your email provider, set gmail to forward to yahoo and no one will be the wiser. I had to do this for ages, in the end I converted totally to yahoo.
