The P800 may have fewer bugs, but it's gonna be only because the P800 has been out in Japan for ages because they are tolerant of bugs.

The real question is what the software situation will be like on the P800, it'll probablty have J2ME which will help but good native software is always handy and it probably won't have much of that. Of course app signing has prevented most of that for the SPV too.

I won't be changing, I love my SPV

the simple things appeal to me like the intergrated camera and picture phone book. I have never used the camera on the spv cus its never with me when i want it and when it is its so finiky to use. I do like the spv a lot but the p800 does look very appealing.

I won't be getting rid of my SPV ;)

The lack of T9 alone is a showstopper as far as I am concerned..

The P800 is definitely a PDA with phone built in, more like XDA's etc, there's PocketPC ones, Palm OS ones, and now Symbian OS ones. Cool format and it's got potentials... I'm just after something a little smaller and simpler at the moment.

PDA and phone haven't quite converged yet, P800 leans towards PDA, SPV leans towards phone, hopefully in another year or 2 we'll have a genuine combined product. Inbuilt camera would be cool...

I also don't like the idea of a stylus. I don't want a pda, I want a phone with basic pda functions. I like the one handed principle of MS Smartphone.

Can you tap out a quick text message one handed if you're on the bus with a load of shopping on your other hand? Not sure, but even if you can, without T9 it'll be quite painful.

However I'll wait and see what people think when it's launched.

Besides, you don't want to be forced to use 2 hands (hold phone in one stylus in the other) when your browsing through your pr0n.

A friend of mine works in the IBM research labs in Zurich so (as with most phones - the UK is so far behind!) has had access to the P800 for quite some time.

The P800 is undoubtedly a very capable device, but it has gone further down the PDA route than the SPV. My friend's main comment was that you needed to be comfortable using a stylus with your phone - even though it has that flip down keyboard. That was something he wasn't quite so keen on although he was impressed with it in general. However, I think it comes down to personal taste, and what you want out of your phone - and I reckon you'd do well to play with it first before buying one. Or just wait to hear Paul's undoubtedly indepth review when he gets his

If the P800 had been available in the UK at the same time as the SPV I may have gone for the P800, but to be honest I just became sick and tired of waiting for handsets that will have been out in Europe for up to 6 months by the time we can buy them in the UK (and I wasn't prepared cane my wallet by buying SIM free from abroad!). I was also considering a Nokia 3650, but again I just couldn't be arsed to wait as I'd pretty much had enough of my Nokia 7110 that I've had for longer than I care to remember...

Yeah the 3650 has an even weirder keyboard than the 7210 (which incidentally is a pretty dodgy/girly looking/plasticy phone - a friend of mine is sending his back). From just looking at the pictures it's hard to tell whether the 3650 keyboard would grow on you given usage, or just annoy the hell out of you...

The 7210 keybaord grows on you apparently, my flatmate has one and he's perfectly happy with it. TBH the SPV keypad is pretty fiddly to begin with, personally it only took a few days to adjust to it though.

I was considering waiting for the 6610 at one point, which is essentially the 7210 in a nicer shell. Until I discovered that, like a lot of phones, Vodafone seems to have first dibs on it and nobody seemed to be able to tell me when it would be available on Orange... if ever!

Monolithix, has your flat mate found any decent ring tones for it? I think some manufacturers are really taking the mick with their default ring tones (the SPV included) as they're totally useless... Just because it does polyphonic ring tones is no excuse for the default ones being no good to man nor beast...

Orange have told me to expect the p800 release 3 weeks from now! ;)

if there are certification issues on oranges will these issues still apply on a voda or o2 phone or a sim free unlocked one???

Its at the operators disgression, although I think T-Mobile have/are going to implement it on their US SmartPhone.

SIM unlocking does not remove the certification lock.

I've used a P800 but I don't think it's as good as the SPV. Well, it's faster, more reliable, doesn't freeze, doesn't feel as big as it looks, but the SPV is smaller, runs on Microsoft instead of Symbian(much better from my point of view) and the programs are bigger and more advanced than the P800.

The camera (on the P800) isn't as good as the 7650's, it can't play mp3s or mpegs, but it does have a notepad and some decent games come with the phone.

Once again, I like the SPV better but the P800 is definitely a competitor.

The p800 general release will be seen early to mid febuary. You can buy them now on expansys but their prices take the piss. As a developer this piece of equipment has seriously impressed me.

I have tried to make it crash and fall over but failed in all aspects. It is probably the best performing piece of kit I have seen in a long time.

There is however an issue with the bluetooth side of it. No matter what I tweak, it will not synchronise over bluetooth. I should imagine the first software update Sonyericsson release will sort this. They seem to be quite good at that. Unlike their scandanavian evil empire enemies Nokia who just believe its a privilage to own one and to be happy with that. If you are thinking of getting one, get one. Wait til march and the prices will plummet back to normality. Oh and barry_pollard, you can convert it to a one handed device by replacing the mini cover with the keypad cover. Its very adaptable and one of its many plus points.

Yeah, but I got the impression that was mostly just for calls. Can you text with the keypad?

Do like all the reports of speed and stability though.

Also I haven't seen one so I could be talking crap...
