Hi.

This morning I switched on my SPV C600 and got a warning message "You are running low on storage space, please delete some files etc...".

Checked SP Task Mgr and it reported \IPSM Folder only had 0.50mb out of 16.96mb free space.

The above has appeared all of sudden, I have not installed any new applications, not copied across any files for at least over a month.

I have deleted all SMS messages in sent/deleted items.

I have deleted all the PIE Browsing, cookie, cache files.

Anyone any ideas why all of sudden the message would appear, also is there anything else i can to remove files which are not needed by the OS? Any FIles, any settings?

Thanks in advance.

Check \Storage\My Documents for any large files (MP3's etc), dont forget this is the default location for files received via BT or IR. Do you have an email account on there? Don't forget to remove any large attachements you may have...

hi Monolithix

Cheers for the above, there are no large files, in My Documents, I keep everything on my miniSD card.

Been through all the folders in \Storage\My Documents and there is nothing but the default files that the phone is shipped with, ie, .jpg files.

No attachments as far as I can tell as not managed to find any, I do have my pop3 account and also an exchange account which i reguarly sync, maybe this is where the space has gone, where would i look?

Thanks.

Hmm, maybe. Off the top of my head i cant remember the exact location of the email file, i believe its called cemail.vol though, so check that file size if you see it.

What have you got installed to main memory? Stuff like the .NET CF 2.0 takes up loads of space and has to be installed to the handset itself...

Yep cemail.vol holds the email and SMS information.

Also check the MAPI folder as that contains all your sent SMS etc

Finally make sure you haev deleted the items in your deleted folder as it's one place people forget about.

if your using the imate ROM, copy imate.bmp out of your windows flder onto your pc, open it in a graphic editor program such as paint shop pro and decrease the colour depth to 16 colours and choose nearest match. then copy back to the windows folder on the device replacing the original. This will save you about 150k of space :D

This might be a longshot, but do you use PMRecorder?

I'm so used to having it running in the background, that it didn't even cross my mind it had filled up my SD Car :D

Thanks all for your suggestions.

I did attempt to install .Net 2.0 awhile back, but as per most people, not enough space. Still had the install log for it though. only 14.8KB, now deleted.

cemail.vol is currently 284KB, is this ok to delete? I regularly delete any un-needed sms messages both in sent and deleted items.

MAPI folder is empty.

Nope dont use PMRecorder.

Today SP Task Mgr shows 1.76MB (10%).

Any ideas as to why my space is being eaten up and what files are safe to delete is greatly welcome.

Thanks.

I am having same space problems. What I observed is when I install some programs (no matter if it is in internal memory or card) and uninstall them some amount of internal memory gets eaten by OS itself by increasing the size of .vol files. I have Documents and Settings\default.vol file now at size 2.61M which is considerably larger than usual ~250KB. Anyone having any idea to get back this kind of memory space?

Had the same problem which occurred just prior to a few other issues such as an inability to restore via Sprite backup. I decided to bite the bullet and did a hard reset :D

Following reinstallation of all my programmes regained my disappeared memory, as you'd expect. Oddly enough found all the reinstalled programmes listed correctly in "Remove Programs" whereas first time around very few had :D

Anyway question I'm interested in is does anybody know if a small stand alone app exists which alerts you if your memory falls below a user defined amount.

I've become paranoid about memory since the last great crash but I'm quickly getting very bored of constantly checking to make sure my SP5 hasn't thrown another wobbly :D

There is a file called \Storage\windows\evtlog.txt and it is growing everyday. Maybe that is the one you need to work on also and here is how to do just that. I don't know what that is for but I did it on October 18 and since then I do not have any problems.

1- Rename the evtlog.txt file

2- A new evtlog.txt file will be created automatically when you refresh the file system

3- Make the new one "Read only"

4- Restart phone, you cannot delete the renamed file yet (I am guessing this is needed to disconnect the renamed file from the software whichever is using it...)

5- Delete the old renamed file...

I hope I could help some people...

I gained a whole load of space by moving most of the folders contained within '\Windows\AppMgr' folder to my storage card. I left the folder called 'install'.

The only noticable effect on any applications is that when launching them after moving the folders the phone will ask again if it is OK to run that file. It should only ask once. The only application I have that didn't like this was Route 66 so I copied that folder back to the original location. Keeping copies of eveything on the storage card means you can always move a folder back if you have a problem with a particular application.

I saved about 5MB by doing this, but it will depend on how many applications you have installed. Some only use a few KB in that folder while some put files there that are quite large given the small amount of phone memory available.

I don't know if there will be an issue when uninstalling a program, so it would be best to move the folder for that program back to the AppMgr folder before trying to uninstall.

Here are some things you can try:

1. Install programs to your storage card when possible.

2. Read HERE for info about moving internet tmp files to your storage card.

3. Move most of the files from internal memory "my documents" to storage card "my documents".

4. If you use UPX on dll and exe files stored on the phone you can save much space. Just copy them from your phone to your computer, pack them and copy them back. Some files won't work after beeing UPXed, so keep backups! And be sure NOT to pack files stored in ROM, or else you will end up with LESS free space (cause the file would be stored both in rom AND storage-memory ;D).

5. You can also experiment with moving system files (non-rom once) from the windows directory to the storage card. If you've installed ".NET Compact Framework 2.0 SP1" on your phone, a directory called "windows" has been created on your storage card (if you didn't install it to the main memory :)). This directory has already been added to your phones system paths. So you can try to move files from "internal memory windows" to "storage card windows". Yeah.. and don't bother copying rom-files! :D

To find non-rom system files with the internal file explorer remember to uncheck "Hide hidden files" and "Hide systemfiles" and check "Hide rom files" in options.
