Upgrading from SPV600 to M3100

Morning,

Need some help. Feel I am being thick, maybe it's the hangover.

Got my M3100 yesterday having been a SPV500/600 user for the past couple of years.

Suprised to not find this new device does not have the option to select different profiles by a tap of the power button. This seems to turn the screen off and put it in some form of lock mode until I tap it again. The previous SPV's I owned were locked by holding down the "red phone" key. Equally I can't find how to select different profiles anywhere - which I can't believe is true.

The other thing I noticed is that it appears impossible to dial one handed as there is no numeric/t9 keypad to find contacts (I have over 600 so the scroll wheel isn't practical). I mean how are you supposed to dial whilst piling down the M40 at 159 MPH? (oh yeah you can only do that if you're a policeman). Is there a solution to this,

Thanks for the help people - NURSE! more coffee, NOW NURSE!

Mozzer.

On mine if I press the green phone button from the homescreen the dial pad pops up. I just key in the name t9-like and hit Talk. Seems straightforward - same as my C550.

ah-ha! I'm even more confused in another way now as I read somewhere on this board that T9 wasn't on the phone because of high license charges for it.

Thanks for the tip though.

Any idea where the profiles can be found?

Mozz.

Can you lock this device so it does not dial in your pocket?

WM5 PPC version doesn't have profiles built in like smartphones. You can either change the sound options by clicking on the sound icon on the top bar or download a profile app (there's a free on on Modaco).

The device puts the ppc into standby when you push the power button, leaving the phone app running.

The phone dialer uses a T9-type logic in that it will offer all names in your contacts who match the T9 letters you type on the dialpad.

There are two routes to lock One if to set it in BUTTONS to lock all buttons except the Power button, the second is to use the LOCK function to require a pin to access the device (you can set it to lock after 30 secs, one minute etc). I use both - as an incoming call, text, email or reminder will "wake the device" in your pocket and then the buttons are live unless it requires the pin.

Thanks for the tips. I've tried searching in downloads for a profile manager but nothing bubbles to the top when I search. Do you recall what it's called or have a link to it?

Thanks,

Robert.

PS Why oh why does MS develop cool functionality like profiles and then not include it in WM5.0? For instance how do I put it in flight mode?

Its called PPC Profiles Plus and its here

Flight Mode is accessed via Comm Manager - which is accessible by a hardware button below the Power Button. In Comm Manager, you can also switch it from Speaker to Vibrate.

When you first make the jump from smartphone to ppc, there are a few things like this, but once you are used to the ppc way of doing it, it seems fine. Do yourself a favour - give it a week to get used to the various differences in operating a ppc. Most people express come concern that they don't like the ppc interface and some change back within 24 hours - but those who stick with it for a week or more rarely go back!

On most WM5 phones you can tap on the signal strength bar at the top and choose 'flight mode' there, but, on the Vario II at least, this seems to have been removed.

You can either hold down the power button for about 5 seconds, which will give you a confirmation that any unsaved data will be lost, and then totally shut down the entire PDA - that will disable the phone, as well as everything else, such as reminders, until it's switched on again.

Alternatively, you can bring up the comms manager (button below the power button) and tap on (or use the wheel to select) the phone icon, which will make the icon go grey and disable the phone functionality, while leaving the rest of the PDA functional. Bear in mind that you also need to (ok, should) disable Bluetooth and Wi-Fi on a plane, so make sure those icons are greyed out too.

Thanks for the help with Profile Plus....however it hung the SPV M3100 like an absolute b*sta*d. Had to uninstall it. :D

I had exactly the same problem with that software on my Vario II and uninstalled it again within a few minutes.

Can anyone tell me if there are any other options to add profiles to the hermes based phones please?

Hi all,

Whilst we are on the subject of shorcuts and changing profiles etc.

Does anyone know of a quick way to put the phone (SPV M3100) into silent (virbate) mode?

On the MDA Vario, you just push and hold the Comm Manager button, but on the SPV this just takes you to Comms Manager.

Thanks

Markee

While at first I thought that it was odd, I can now see why the profiles function was removed from the device. The M3100 is more of a computer now than a phone and the new OS reflects that. You don't get a profile option for sound on Windows XP so neither should you on the mobile counterpart.

To switch between ringing (or ringing and vibrate if thats what your profile is set to)/Vibrate/Silent - point to the volume icon on the top bar. this also gives you the option of turning the volume down.

In response to the initial topic question, instead of dialling, why not add a voice tag (ie 'home') to your main numbers, then all you do is press the 'voice' button (just below the scroll wheel, with a speech bubble on it), and hey presto, it dials who you asked for!

Start > Control Panel > Sounds and Audio Devices > Sounds tab

There's a sound scheme pulldown there

You can't do it off the shelf but luckily someone on XDA developers site has made an application that does it. You can then assign this to a button, I've got it assigned to Button 5 (press and hold).
