Guest paul1664 Posted August 26, 2006 Report Posted August 26, 2006 I am a little concerned about 3G data usage. I don't want to end up with a huge bill at the end of the month. I have wireless at home and it all works nicely but the 3100 still seems to want to connect thru 3G a little too much for my linking. Is there anywhere I can specifically say "only connect via 3G when wifi is not available" or "never connect via 3G" Skype has a manual setting but most apps do not. Egress always dials out thru 3G regardless of whether I have a strong 3G signal or not. If I can't control this then I'm gonna have to bag it and return it via distance selling rules and go TMob w'n'w.
Guest marisa4755 Posted August 26, 2006 Report Posted August 26, 2006 You could try using connection manager to turn off gprs altogether when you want to only use wifi. I used to do that when I was paying for gprs. Also, on the Vario, there is a little icon on the top bar, which if you are connected and using 3g, it has a little 3g in a tiny box with moving arrows just underneath it. If you are connected and using wifi, you get the little tower icon with arrows which move until they make the connection, but then are still.
Guest Confucious Posted August 26, 2006 Report Posted August 26, 2006 Go T-Mob The Hermes is wasted without data and W'n'W means you het HSDPA and don't have to worry about the costs - also if you buy in store I believe there doing 25% off flext plans again! Bargain!

Guest paul1664 Posted August 26, 2006 Report Posted August 26, 2006 (edited) Hi guys, thanks for the help. According to this thread (http://www.modaco.com/Switching-between-Wifi-and-3G-GPRS-t244675.html) its the direct push forcing the 3G connection. That would certainly tie in with when I set up Messaging to use mail2web.com. I'm considering making the move to Tmob - I'll see what kind of deal I get in the shop today (if available) and telesales. If I like then I'll move to Tmob and return my 3100 under the distance selling. Would I need to supply an 'excuse'? I'll certainly get the 3G trial and maybe Orange will have a w'n'w match in the future. I tried many times to get the Edited August 26, 2006 by paul1664
Guest jimbouk Posted August 26, 2006 Report Posted August 26, 2006 1) You should turn directpush off in com mgr before starting a wifi session. 2) You dont need an excuse to return a device 3) You can only get the unlimited under Panther or Premier plans.
Guest NikLP Posted August 26, 2006 Report Posted August 26, 2006 3) You can only get the unlimited under Panther or Premier plans. (and after all I've said to you Jim!!) That's not true - I've been assigned this bundle on a Canary tariff. The last I heard it could be assigned to ANY animal tariff. The reason for the confusion on this matter I am assigning to OCS's (seemingly blind) awareness of the evil Panther 75 tariff. The realisation that the OWU bundle exists is spreading. I say, just hold out for a week or so, or just keep ringing OCS until you find someone who knows it exists, or point them to the www1.orange.co.uk/ow1/ url and see where you go from there. You'll need to be talking to someone who actually gives a sh!t though in the first place.

If you visit that URL you will read in the first clause "The Offer is an Orange World Unlimited Bundle ("the Bundle") which is available to new and existing Orange customers with 3G phones on Panther & Premier tariffs ("Eligible Customers") until 1 September 2006." It does specifically say Panther and Premier only!
Guest Confucious Posted August 26, 2006 Report Posted August 26, 2006 that is the Orange lottery - as he says, he has it on Canary. Orange, it seems will give some offers to some people while refusing point blank to give them to others with a higher spend, there seems to be no logic. the terms also refer, I believe, to WAP browsing and GPRS which says a lot for their data knowledge as others have been assured it is full internet and 3G as well. At least T are honest and consistant with their offers. Just my 2d's worth

Just my 2d's worth I just phoned up orange and had a whinge at them about my tariff, they offered me 120 free texts a month for life - added onto any free texts that come with any future contract I take up. Still no word on data though. I'm a little worried because every time I make a call, it says 'orange 3G' at the top. What's up with that?
