MDA Vario II Overheating?

So, I was using my new MDA Vario II normally today. Around 3pm today it was at 60% battery. I pressed the power key to put it in standby mode and put it away. An hour later I picked it up and noticed it was VERY hot. I turned it on and the device instantly complained of low battery and it was indeed very low. I didn't have wifi on, although i noticed in the connection manager that data connection was on.

I am using an exchange server. I am also polling a pop3 server every 15 minutes from the phone.

Any ideas what might have drained the battery? could it be a fault?
