I've been looking around for an article about knowing when you're using Wi-Fi or GPRS/EDGE with little success... I've heard stories of people browsing over WiFi and suddenly the WiFi signal drops, and the data stream is then transfered via GPRS/EDGE without the user's knowledge.

I've got an i-mate SP5, and I'm on Rogers Pay As You Go account, and the data charges are kind of expensive (0.05$/kb) and since the SP5 runs Internet Explorer Mobile, it can access almost any webpage, full of multimedia, it can make for some pretty big charges. I haven't been able to access Rogers' little Navigation WAP site, which only charges 0.02$ per page, (its full of text links). Its annoying how you have to have a 5.00$ minimum balance to access the internet too! A few months ago, when your account balance had expired, internet access was at no charge!! I WANT THAT BACK!! <_<

So, i'm just wondering if there is any way to easily see which form of wireless you are using.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks

You can always tell if your GPRS is connected from the icon on the topbar. Before starting a wifi connection, make sure you push and hold the red end call button for a few seconds so that the G symbol is not above the signal strength icon.

If you then turn on wifi and start surfing, you will know if the gprs tries to connect as the G will appear with two arrows below it.

I am not experienced with this smartphone, but surely the wifi shows whether its connected or not too.

Its the same on the smartphone yes. However you can't kill a GPRS data connection by holding red (it'll just lock the keypad). you have to open comm manager and then disconnect the active data connection from there.

Hmm works on my SP5.. it doesn lock the keypad too most of the time.. you have to release it just in time to disconnect the GPRS, but not lock the keypad. Anyway no big deal, just unlock it afterwards
