Speed issues with 'locating' web sites when surfing on vario

I currently have both a vodaphone 1605 and t-mobile vario II. The vodaphone 1605 connects via the 3g network and speed tests show its connecting at 470 kb/sec. My vario connects via HSDPA, and speed tests show it connects at a wonderful 1.2mb/sec. But I find surfing the net quicker on the vodaphone 1605. It seems as though the vario takes a while just to 'locate' the web page before opening it. I tried opening www.modaco.com on both machines, and the vodaphone opened the site 2 seconds before the Vario. Once the vario had 'located' the site it did seem much quicker.

I am finding this quite frustrating as I sometimes have to wait quite a bit when opening plain text wap sites. My p900 on orange seems quicker than the new vario.

Has anyone else noticed this?

Due to a bug with WM5 make sure you haven't got static IP and static DNS configured for your WIFI connection.

Set them to automatic and the "Locating..." mesage will go away and web pages will arrive quicker. Must be a bug as WIFI (even being off when surfing 3G/GPRS) should NOT affect it !

Also try setting to a level 3 DNS server such as 4.2.2.1 and 4.2.2.2 or your own ISP's DNS.

Quicker to have hard coded DNS on your 3G settings as you wont have to wait for packets to be sent and received to network's DHCP servers for the info

This problem seems to have pretty much disappeared for me using the default TMob settings. I wonder if it was a problem with their HSDPA service before the official rollout?

Cant speak for T-Mobile, only Orange :)

The general settings by operators are AUTOMATIC generally, which should always work. Exception on Orange is the proxy server for WAP.

As I said, its fact that if Operators DNS servers are hard coded your device doesnt have to send or receive packets for the DNS addresses to/from the operators servers. In practice it shouldnt really matter if just left to Automatic.
