Vario 2 as Laptop Modem (USB or IR)

Help!! After hours of searching, reading Arne's guide, re-reading the poxy manual, searching again I still can't get my vario 2 to work as a modem for my laptop. (which is why I got WnWpro!)

I'm sure I'm following the process right (There's nothing contradictory on Arne's unwired guide vs. the info in the manual) and I get as far as the PC dialer dialling *99#, the phone lights blink (Connection/Send Data Receive Data then phone or PC 'kicks me out'. I tried this with USB and IR on two different laptops.

The phone lights stop blinking, and the dialer carries on 'verifying user name blah blah', and then returns a 619 error.

Is it something simple like I don't have the correct user name and password? The manual says I may/may not need one - but makes no mention of what they bloody should be. I'm guessing it may be phone related or this password thing but I've no idea!!

Like I said before HELP!! :D If anyone's got there Vario2 to work as a modem is there any chance you can confirm what APN you used, whether (and what) you used as a 'user name' and 'password' or any other things I can check to try and get this sorted.

Cheers.

Shane.

ps. Pauls DNS tweaks are the bomb!

Don't think you need to use *99# if you are using it over 3G, although what the settings should be I am not sure.

There is something else nagging at the back of my mind which caused me to get endless 619 errors once, but I can't quite remember what it is. Some weird setting deep within the modem settings on the PC. Like having to insert a pause or something. Will try and have a think later.

I'm curious about this too - is it possible to set it up to use bluetooth instead of usb? If so, anyone know how? :D

I can connect mine over USB fine.

I used the USBModem_Dialer.exe that was on the CD to create the connection first time. Can't remember settings for sure, but think that the APN was set to 'internet', username was 'user' and password was either 'pass', 'wap' or 'one2one' (really can't remember sorry). I think it does dial *99#.

I tried the USB dialler exe that was on the disk, tried a variety of user names and passwords but still booted me out.

I know I didn't try the user/passwords you listed above, but my APN was defo 'internet', so I'll give those user/password combos a bash when I get home and see how it goes.

Cheers.

Wahooo! Not sure what the hell settings I had flucked around with, but made sure my wmodem APN, matched my internet settings in 'connections' and made sure the usb auto dialler matched too.

I think I used a user name of t-mobile and password of one2one, maybe I didn't need to with the correct APN settings, but hey ho, it works a treat now.

Did a speed test @ bandwidthplace and got 944k/s - I'm happy!

Cheers for the help lads.

Where did you get one2one as the password?

I've tried it and the modem lightd up all three boxes for several secs then dumps the link

re One2one - Rickwoookie mentioned it, in an earlier post.

Your problems sound exactly like mine.

Like I said, I'm not sure the user and password were the key to getting a connection, but I changed them at the same time as making sure all my APNs matched and then hey presto. I'll have another play tonight and try and report a specificaly what I fixed to get it to work.

Why don't you just write down all your settings and report that instead...? :D

try in the advanced settings in the modem properties on the laptop to add this "extra initialization command" (under the 'Advanced' tab)

+CGDCONT=1,"IP","APN-NAME"

Where APN-NAME is Oranges Access point name

e.g for T-Mobile I use

+CGDCONT=1,"IP","general.t-mobile.uk"

Give that a whirl, remember do this on the modem in control panel on the laptop and not the phone

Cheers

Because my phone was at home, and I don't have a photographic memory, better to post something that might help rather than nothing??

Anyway, all my APNs are set to general.t-mobile.uk. Including the APN name used in the USB Autodialer (default seems to be 'internet') that came on the CD with the phone.

Step1 Check Phone APN:That's the APN in: click Start, click Settings, click connections tab, click connections icon, click Manage existing connections, choose the connection you use for internet, click edit, click next, then make sure the APN is general.t-mobile.uk, then finish.

Then for the wmodem settings...

Step2 Check Wmodem APN: Click Start, click Programs, click Wmodem, click menu, click APN setting, then make sure the APN is general.t-mobile.uk just like your internet connection you checked above. I also left Preset GPRS settings ticked.

Step3: Check Autodialler APN: Then if using the autodialler that came on the disc, leave user and password blank and change the APN name to whatever you're using in step 1 and 2.

I used the Infrared link ealier to with no bother (other than the current T-Mobile 3G network issues) using the above settings too (using a manually setup network connection rather than USB dialler).

The thing mentioned by Andy was the thing I was thinking about. Don't know whether it will help or not.

i was having the same issue and in the end it was because I had the fit4cat Hermes tweaker configured to make my internet connection persistant. disabling this worked a treat for me after days of frustration!
