Guest andyfitter Posted August 30, 2006 Report Posted August 30, 2006 M3100 arrived this morning... Phoned up to activate the SIM and the phone just sits there, saying "searching for network" I know I have reception here as my other phone is OK. THe new phone also isn't in Flight Mode. Been on the phone to CS for ages and can't get through. Can anybody offer any advice? I presume that it should still find the Orange Network even if the SIM isn't activated yet, otherwise how could the SIM be activated over the air? Andy.

The phone will search for a network that it's authorised to use. Should be fine when it's activated. (Don't quote me though! :D )
Guest Paul (MVP) Posted August 30, 2006 Report Posted August 30, 2006 Not necessarily. The SIM may not be allowed onto the O network, so it's sitting there trying to register and failing. Don't give up hope yet, phone'n'moan :D P

I got mine yesterday and it was just saying searching for nearly 3hrs. then i took the battery off put it back on and as if by magic got orange signal got text messages and all working ok..
Guest Paul (MVP) Posted August 30, 2006 Report Posted August 30, 2006 I've seen that in the past too, where a reboot makes it log on to the network correctly after they've 'worked their magic' :D P
Guest Sadlybrokeboy Posted August 30, 2006 Report Posted August 30, 2006 Don't panic! The new SIM cards (I can't remember the abbreviation) aren't activated as standard! It can a number of hours for the SIM updates to come through, I've had to wait up to 3 hours before now for them to activate a phone! I called on Friday to activate mine, and they do say to leave un-plugged for two hours after you call them and then switch it on... Just means you have to get through to them now I guess :D Good luck and be patient! Matt
Guest andyfitter Posted August 30, 2006 Report Posted August 30, 2006 (edited) I realise that SIM cards take a while to active - anything up to 24 hours going on past experience. I called about three hours ago to activate it. I just figured that the phone would say something like "Unregistered SIM card" or similar, which is what I'd seen on other phones, instead of just 'Searching', which implies to me that the phone can't even find the network. If I put my (still working) original SIM from my 6630 in the M3100 it also sits there saying "searching..." too, which implies a phone issue to me. Maybe the phone has to activated in some way too by 'O'. I'll wait til the morning and see what that brings. Edited August 30, 2006 by andyfitter

Guest jimbouk Posted August 30, 2006 Report Posted August 30, 2006 switch it off for a few hours... the network needs the sim update to be in its queue before your phone tries to register...
Guest andyfitter Posted August 30, 2006 Report Posted August 30, 2006 Hmmm, that doesn't sound good... P Looks like I spoke too soon... It's all just sprung to life. Guess O manage to lock the handset in some form too. Relief!
Guest Trancemaster Posted August 31, 2006 Report Posted August 31, 2006 Had the same thing with mine. Registrations told me to leave it switched off for four hours or so. Balls to that I though, wanna play with my new toy! I just left it on and then after a few hours I noticed my original phone was saying "searching" so hit the reset button on the M3100, booted back up and got a signal almost immediately! Its just a shame that the 3G coverage in my area sucks balls. One bar if I'm lucky, GPRS only if I'm not.

Like the phone, think I've had enough of the network. I've had a long running problem in my local area, North West London - for nearly a year now, where there appears to be something fundamentally wrong with a local basestation. This manifests itself as the phone locking onto a 3G signal, but then 'disappearing' off of the network - no inbound or outbound calls are possible. If I force the phone into 2G it all works fine. Talked to CS a few times and they said it was a known problem with the 6630 (hah!) where it doesn't drop back to 2G if the 3G signal drops. I knew that was rubbish as it regularly switched back and forth between 2G and 3G in other places, just not near my flat. I was hoping/preying that the M3100 didn't suffer the same problem, but it does. Means I have to manually switch to 2G around the NW1 area otherwise the phone isn't useable. Far from ideal. I might 7 day it, close my account and go to T-Mob, who I never had problems with previously. Edited August 31, 2006 by andyfitter
