Guest csc12345678 Posted September 1, 2006 Report Posted September 1, 2006 Hi ! I used Microsoft Media Encoder to convert my VCD to play on my SP. However, the size is hugh, sometimes hitting 100MB. What is the correct way to convert. My friend has a movie which he downladed, only about 20MB. Also, I want to watch lectures. I just need to extract the subtitles. So I don't need the whole screen. Any advice on how I can do that ? Thanks !

Guest csc12345678 Posted September 2, 2006 Report Posted September 2, 2006 What is the length of video you are encoding and what device do you have ? About 60 min. I have successfully used VobEdit to extract subtitles from videos :D
Guest martin Posted September 2, 2006 Report Posted September 2, 2006 100MB for 60 minutes of audio/video seems OK. I've never heard of a full film being 20MB unless it was VERY poor quality, MUCH shorter than 60 mins or low resolution. Do you have the files audio/video information ? If you are using a QVGA screen then I would be looking much higher than 100MB to get good quality.
Guest csc12345678 Posted September 2, 2006 Report Posted September 2, 2006 When I encode for my PDA with a bigger screen, it's about 100 MB. When I encode for a Smartphone, also 100MB. Doesn't seem correct to me .... 100MB for 60 minutes of audio/video seems OK. I've never heard of a full film being 20MB unless it was VERY poor quality, MUCH shorter than 60 mins or low resolution. Guest martin Posted September 2, 2006 Report Posted September 2, 2006 What are your PDA and Smartphone models ? They might actually both be QVGA (320x240) even though the screens sizes are different. Also have you compared the file properties of both PDA and Smartphone output files ?
Guest csc12345678 Posted September 3, 2006 Report Posted September 3, 2006 PDA = Dell x50 SP = Dopod 585 (similar to O2 IIm) I generated the PDA using Windows Media Encoder using the widescreen option for Pocket PC. For the SP, I use TMPGE using the templates provided at (oh dear, I can't remember where !) What are your PDA and Smartphone models ?
