Guest c600chris Posted September 9, 2006 Report Posted September 9, 2006 seems like the windows live mobile beta is gone from microsoft's connect site. i've just got myself a c600 after 2 years of having the c500 and really wanna give this beta a go. does anyone know if it's still available somwhere?
Guest Paul (MVP) Posted September 9, 2006 Report Posted September 9, 2006 Signup for the beta is now closed I believe. P
Guest thenext1 Posted September 11, 2006 Report Posted September 11, 2006 Signup for the beta is now closed I believe. P do you know if there's a mail address for submitting bugs to micrsoft? i'm not in the beta program... Anyway, Live Messenger beta always uses the GPRS connection wven if wifi is available and no option to control this.. I heard that is microsofts policy to prevent the battery from discharging very fast... but that way, my GPRS traffic instead will discharge lightning-fast!!! (Live Messenger even downloads avatars!!!). The only way to force it into using wifi is to go into airplane mode, which is ridiculous even as a workaround. Also, there's a lot of useless things like rss, news, live contacts that I would like to disable since, other than being slow and cluttering my contact book with nicknames, uses approx. 4 megs of memory that won't go away until you reboot the phone (until then Live Messenger will also intermittently use gprs)

No. Firstly, yes, there is a contact method for submitting bugs, but that is available to the beta testers only via Microsoft Connect, because the beta is only available to the beta testers -- if you've downloaded it from another source, any problems or issues you have are your own fault. It does NOT always use the GPRS connection, as you would have found out if you simply pressed Cancel. So the whole flight mode work around IS rediculous because it's not required. The RSS reader and news as well as favourite contacts might be useless for you, but I guarantee that they are helpful for some, if not most.
Guest thenext1 Posted September 12, 2006 Report Posted September 12, 2006 thanks for your answer. It does NOT always use the GPRS connection, as you would have found out if you simply pressed Cancel. So the whole flight mode work around IS rediculous because it's not required. So, pressing cancel while connecting makes WLM use Wifi? I'm suspicious :D I'll try it when the final version comes out, because the beta version can only install in the internal memory and I don't have space to waste. The RSS reader and news as well as favourite contacts might be useless for you, but I guarantee that they are helpful for some, if not most.Yes, but the point is, thast after you start it, and even if you close it and terminate all what's terminable with CeleTask or similar program, it eats up 4 megs of RAM and continually tries to access the network. I don't what the component that makes the network request is, but it does. On windows mobile normally you would make gprs detach pressing the Hang key... after WLM was started and then closed, pressing the key didn't work, or it did for an instant - the gprs icon disappeared and immediately showed up again. This lead to dangerous and sudden discharges of my GPRS account's traffic! :D I hope they consider this as a "bug".
Guest Laser_iCE Posted September 12, 2006 Report Posted September 12, 2006 Like anything, if you're still connected (If you didn't sign out) then when you disconnect from GPRS, of course it's going to try and reconnect -- this happens in the stock Pocket MSN, so no, it's not a bug -- it is the user's fault.

You read my post, did you???? OBVIOUSLY I did sign-out before closing WLM but it kept accessing GPRS. Tried also to terminate WLM-related process but that won't stop it from going GPRS and doesnt' free up the 4 megs of RAM. So, it's microsofts fault (Heck its a beta, it can't be perfect!!! I just would like to make sure they fix it before release!!!!!!!!!!)

This has been debated in the wlm newsgroup and it's not a bug.. here's a quote from m$: Current generation WiFi chips do not have a low power mode in which they can still receive data. They are fine for downloading email or a web page etc where the chip powers up, pulls down data and then powers down. They are not so good for always connected push applications such as Messenger or ActiveSync* which would need to keep the chip powered up so we can receive incoming messages. Your battery would go flat VERY fast. Implementation wise we tell the Connection Manager that we prefernconnections that supports wake on incoming data. GPRS is one such connection, current generation WiFi is not. We will only use WiFi if you do not have a GPRS connection configured. I am told that there are new WiFi chips in the pipeline that solve this problem and will support wake on incoming data while still consuming little power. When such phones are available WLM should automatically make use of it. And the reporting of bugs is made trough a customised form, not by email... and if you HAD been a betatester you would have known this.. and that's why bug report from isn't really what they're looking for.. :D
