Sorry for the questions if this seems straight forward to some. What are the benefits of changing the IMEI or CID of the phone? What is actually the difference between them?

thanks!!!

Changing the IMEI is illegal in many countries as it allows you to re-use a stolen phone that has been barred by the telephone networks in that country. There are potentially legitimate resons for changing the IMEI for example repairing a phone with a new mainboard and some semi-legitimate resons such as importing a new device to China or Turkey.

If you have to replace the mainboard odds are you'd know how to change the IMEI and solutions do exist for other devices that Turkish or Chinese people use to get around their country's laws.

In the UK the law is that only the manufacturer or certifiying body for a device is allowed to change the IMEI. Which excludes us users then.... The fine is

thanks! what does IMEI and CID stand for?

IMEI = International Mobile Equipment Identifier - it's a GSM mobile device's universal format seriel number if you like and applies to all types of GSM phones.

CID = Country ID ( I think) and is a HTC specific term that applies to their Windows based devices including the non-phone enabled iPaqs.
