Is it possible to create a custom ROM from the phone's contents?

After having to perform 4 seperate reflashes or hard resets of my phone over the weekend, I am seriously SICK of reloading all my registered apps, reg tweaks, etc.

Is there some way to make my own custom ROM, that would basically make an exact backup of my phone (hopefully including storage card items as well) and all it's programs, reg settings, etc?

Basically a one-step restore for if/when my phone screws up again?

Using the T-Mobile SDA running the newest imate SP5m ROM 2.6.33 xxxx...

Have a feeling this isn't possible, but figured I'd ask.

Thanks,

Jeff

It is possible but you would have to have knowledge on hacking the rom and to put it bluntly if you did, then you would not be asking the question here :D

Your best bet is to use a backup application like Sprite Backup so after a hard reset you can back up the phone to the pre reset configuration.

Just make sure you read all the instructions first.

Don't forget it's best to install your applications etc to the storage card rather than the phone to save valuable space.

Why did you relash/hard reset so much?

Indeed, a backup util is your best bet.

E.g., SPB Backup creates an EXE you keep on the Storage Card. After a reset, just run the EXE and you're right back ready to rock :D

Well, I was desperately trying to use one of the newer ROMS. I tried both the qtek and imate SP5m 2.6.33xxx ROMs, and both of them ran beautifully at first, but eventually they kept freezing up at the boot screen (windows mobile or the HTC Innovation one). The only way to get the phone to successfully boot again agter these freezes was either hard reset, or boot up in bootloader and reflash.

So, will this SPB Backup REALLY put my phone back EXACTLY as it was, 3rd party (registered) apps, reg tweaks, homescreens, plugins, and all? Will it restore both the stuff on the phone AND the storage card? I mean, obviously the hard resets, etc, don't erase the data on the SD, but any apps installed there won't just automatically re-register themselves into the windows registry, so will the backup take care of all that as well? That would be sweet. I'd almost be willing to put the new ROM back on if I knew that each time it screwed up I could click a file and have EVERYTHING back the way it was moments before...

Let me know, and thanks ALOT for the replies...

Hi There,

Sprite Backup will take a snapshot image of your entire device at the time of the backup, so you will be able to backup and restore your text messages, contacts, applications, emails etc, to your SD card/PC. You can create self-restoring backup.exe files so you can restore from a hard reset in a single click. Its the only backup application at the moment for PPC and Smartphone that is capable of restoring after a rom upgrade or device change. Check out http://www.SpriteSoftware.com for more info, MoDaCo Plus members get Sprite Backup free!
