AWFUL call quality

The phone just sounds absolutely TERRIBLE in-call. The speaker distorts like nobody's business. Even when the person on the other end is quietly spoken, they sound loud and muffled.

Also I am conviced that the speaker goes FAR too loud, if I turn the volume up full whack in-call, there is NO WAY that it is safe to use, the speaker nearly blows out of the unit! Not to mention the deafening distortion.

Any ideas if this is happening across the board? Or should I contact Orange and see what they say?

I'm loving the unit, but errrr sometimes I'd like to be able to use it as a PHONE, guys? <_<

Turn the volume down!?

Mine does seem to have the option to turn the volume up very high but I'm happy with the level its at so I've never turned it up more to see how loud it goes. If its really bad even on lower volumes call Orange and ask for a replacement unit, it may be that you've caused the speaker to blow or it could have been a dodgy speaker on initial build.

Whatever you do make sure you tell Orange that it was "like that when you bought it" wether you may have caused the problem or not!!! :D

Its certainly not normal, I'm really impressed with in-call quality on my Vario II, I doubt it programmed or built any different to the Orange version.

uh...

I'm really trying to find out if this is a general thing across many users?

I'll probably just phone Orange and ask them to send a new unit, but I was wondering if they would still do that, or at what point they would tell me to sod off?

Ditto - even set high for use alongside noisy roads call quality seem very good.

If yuo're talking about the speaker phone (the one on the back of the handset) quality, then yes, it is normal. It is too loud during calls and the speaker distorts which in turn causes the back panel to resonate.

If you're talking about the earpiece, then no.

I've had three units and they were all the same.

I've heard tell of the rear speaker being a bit noisy, but I've not had too much bother with that.

It *is* a bit raucous, but I guess I haven't noticed.

I have to say, in comparison, I think the rear speaker is probably less distorted than the front one.

I think I should take this as a sign that the handset is borked and ask for a replacement then! :D

Am I gonna be sweet with that? I've had it maybe three weeks now?

Edit: It's in MINT condition.

Edit2: At the moment, thankfully. Had to put this in to avoid invoking horrible irony.

Sounds like a faulty unit - My front speaker is very good, certainly better than my old Nokia's. On speaker phone, it's a bit noisy, although holding it rather than placing it on the desk helps.

Damn it another ridiculously long call to orange...

Sorted.

Replacement coming tomorrow.

Another thing though, is it me, or are the system sounds really loud? When using headphones etc if I have the device volume at 4/6+, the music volume is fine, but the system sounds are bloody DEAFENING!?

Also my mp3 ringtone is unbelievably quiet compared to the dodgy distorted system sounds?

Reports/Comments/Suggestions?

Yes system sounds are loud - in order to get a ringtone loud enough to hear over traffic i've turned non-essential system sounds off.

This is fine. I don't regard a new email/text message as completely 'non-essential' though, but if I get one when the WMP is on I bloody well know about it!!

Bit confused by all that really... :D

I've set my text message notification to a short sound, so that although it's loud it's not too bad. Emails I only have on vibrate.

It's an annoyance but one I can live with if I can't find something to individually control volume on diifferent notifications.

NikLP, please let us know if your replacement unit solves you problem. Mine is quite loud as well what comes to all kind of sounds; system sounds, front speaker, back speaker etc. But it seems that this could be "normal" reading the other guys posts.

I don't know if this is a general WM5 thing as I had the exact problem when I upgraded my iPAQ 2750 to WM5.

Of course!

I have a sneaking suspicion that the OS plays some part in it, I have a couple of friends with WM5 handsets and they are all sounding "loud" and distorted. They both have Vario's though, although I do know someone with an M3100 but I haven't had a chat with him about it yet.

Should be here within the hour hopefully. Well before 1pm anyway... I know if I go for shower the courier will turn up, but I'm not so hungry for a replacement as I was for the new one, so I don't need to rush that! :D

Well it's better! :D Which is nice...

I keep finding more things about it the bloody thing that annoy me though!

I had no idea that the camera settings were lost on soft reset for example...

Also the camera has crashed once already, and I had to reinstall from a (very luckily made just in time) backup, as the pRSSreader software apparently doesn't like scrolling stuff on the home screen. Don't try it!!

Right heres something to throw into the mix...

Phoned g/friend who is on t mobile. Sound quality awful, lots of 'clicking' noises. Can hear what she says, but its not clear.

I did a hard reset.. and bang... top quality calls (better than my c600) and no clicking.

Explain? :D

The phone part is just a software module so can crash like anything else.

Camera is now broken on this unit which is going to mean a hard reset followed (presumably inevitably) by another replacement... :D
