Guest rintys5 Posted September 24, 2006 Report Posted September 24, 2006 My 3100 has suddenly stopped being recognised on my home PC. It's fine at work, but regardless of the USB port or cable, the 3100 takes about 20 seconds to go into charging mode and another 20 seconds for XP to tell me it's not recognising the USB device. I don't think it's Active Sync but on the safe side I D/L'd the 4.5 beta versio, but no change. I've tried soft reset as well. Anybody got any ideas?

Device Manager is your God!
Guest wills Posted September 25, 2006 Report Posted September 25, 2006 Maybe try deleting the partnership with the phone in Activesync on your home pc and then connect the phone again by the USB cable - hopefully it should pick the phone up again.
Guest fluffcat1 Posted September 25, 2006 Report Posted September 25, 2006 Tried a different USB socket? Different cable? Got any pets that like chewing wires? Richard
Guest Dakers Posted September 25, 2006 Report Posted September 25, 2006 I've had a similiar thing over the last couple of days. Plug it in, and the computer 'pings' so it's recognising a device has been plugged in, but neither the device nor the computer wants to recognise it. Tried it on all of the 4 usb ports on the lappy, two different cables, and even flung in a USB2 PCMCIA card just to be sure. The annoying thing is, it doesn't happen all the time, so I can't work out what it is. I'm beginning to suspect a loose port on the bottom of the device.

I wondered this as well, but here at work it's spot on everytime so I don't think it's the port on my 3100. I actually finally got it to work last night at home after trying 4 different ports and three different cables, on both the front and the rear of the PC. Weird thing is one of the ports that doesn't work now WAS working on Friday night  The non working ports are absolutely fine with other USB things like a memory stick, a camera, etc. Edited September 25, 2006 by rintys5
Guest yrreP Posted September 25, 2006 Report Posted September 25, 2006 If you are in any doubt about the perormance of the device I would seriously consider getting it looked at under warranty... It's too nice a device to have not to work poperly!

That port (and the others that don't work) are fine with my wifes C600, and as I said before, my 3100 works perfectly on my work PC. I am completely at a loss :(
Guest Dr Who Posted September 26, 2006 Report Posted September 26, 2006 When you have it connected go into Device Manager and look at the USB entries. When you come across the one for your device delete the entry and then unplug your phone. Plug it back in to the same port and hopefully it will pick it up and reinstall the drivers for it. You might need to do this for every USB port.
Guest rintys5 Posted September 26, 2006 Report Posted September 26, 2006 Well today it's stopped working on my PC at work but a soft reset cured the problem - something that didn't work at home. Even more unsure what to do now. I'm not actually convinced it is the device, but who knows?

Things rings true of a device issue, but as it works fine on another computer, how can it be!? :( When you plug the device in, is it installing correctly within Device Manager (within Network Adaptors) as a Windows Mobile Device Thingo? If it IS installing correctly, has it created a Local Area Connection within Network Connections? If it has not installed correctly, ir there an ! or ? error? If the worst comes to the worst, call up Orange Technical support, 156 from your Orange handset, option 4, option 2. They may be able to help? :)

OK, so repeat the above step then disconnect and on the phone in settings-connections change the USB to PC function so that advanced functionality is NOT used. Also go into async on the phone and on the PC and delete the current pairing. Restart both the PC and the phone. Plug the phone in and hopefully it will pick up properly. If not I would be asking for a replacement.

Well I had a completey unrelated problem with my home PC which forced me to do a clean reinstall of XP, so I thought this was the perfect time to get to the bottom of this. It seemed the first time it connected after a soft reset, it would show up in the Device Manager network adaptors, but on disconnect & reconnect, it reappeared in the network adaptors section with the little yellow '!'. I turned off the advanced functionality, so it now appears in DM as a Windows CE USB Device and everything seems to be working now. Question is, what have I turned off? Is it only stuff like wireless modem functionality because if it is, that's not a problem at all. Thanks for the help guys :)

All this does is create the TCP/IP LAN connection in Network connections... It's good to turn this off when no traffic is reaching Active Sync, as some firewalls, AV's and what not may determine the TCP/IP connection as something bad, and therefore block all traffic. It's good that all is working, but what was the "!" error you were getting? If you doulble click on it within DM, you should get more info... i'm a bit intrigued :). But then again, as it is working, "If it aint broke don't fix it!". Maybe leave the lil beasty alone. :(
