Guest Blakey Posted September 28, 2006 Report Posted September 28, 2006 Hi, Has anyone yet figured out how to stop Messenger logging us out on the Phone Edition of Pocket PC? With T-Mob's ulimited data I would rather I was always logged in. Also, with Messenger logged in I get a very handy automatic notification on the today screen when I get a hotmail (which is why I'd like Messenger to STAY logged in). But this is no helpful if my phone is inside a different application like Media Player for example. In that case I would love it if my phone displayed the "Mail Icon" on the top menu bar - like it would if I had an SMS. So, is there a plug in to get such an icon displayed when a new hotmail comes in? Thanks all! Blakey

Blakey Unless it's losing the signal for quite a while, it shouldn't log out, and you should get the little MSN people icon in the bar when you get a new message. If you set-up your Hotmail as a mail account, and have it check however often you specify, it will display a mail icon if there's new mail. Since you have unlimited data, a better solution for your mail might be to use true push mail, and simply forward your existing mail accounts to it. http://live.mail2web.com offer free push mail for Windows Mobile devices, or, if you leave your PC on at home most of the time, try the system from http://www.emoze.com although I don't think Hotmail will be any good for emoze as you can't access it as a POP account.

Hmm, I was under the impression that MSN Messenger (on the phone) logged you out after a while. Am I wrong them? If you set-up your Hotmail as a mail account, and have it check however often you specify, it will display a mail icon if there's new mail. How do I do this? I can get to my hotmail from messages, as it seems to be part of my Windows Mobile set up but in order to get the mail I have to do Send/Receive - or it is automatically grabbed when I'm logged into MSN Messenger (although it still does not stick a mail icon on my Star Menu bar if I am logged into Messenger and get a hotmail). Can you explain or point me at a thread to set up hotmail on my phone so that it automatically does a send/receive every N mins and alerts me to new mail?? That would be ace! Since you have unlimited data, a better solution for your mail might be to use true push mail, and simply forward your existing mail accounts to it. http://live.mail2web.com offer free push mail for Windows Mobile devices Is it possible to set up a a free email push account here and have all my hotmail automatically forwarded to it via push email? Many thanks for your help! Blakey
Guest AlanJC Posted October 2, 2006 Report Posted October 2, 2006 Hmm, just thought on the Hotmail front, no, you can't set a message retrieval time, that's for POP or IMAP accounts, not Hotmail. But in your actual hotmail account, have you got an option somewhere to forward all messages to another account? If the answer is yes, then simply goto http://live.mail2web.com and setup an account there, and follow the instructions to add the settings to your device. Then forward your Hotmail to that address you get. If not, then it's yet another reason to stop using Hotmail  I personally hate it, and have been using Gmail for ages now, I just forward that to my mail2web address, and it's a great solution that costs me nothing, other than data.

Not as far as I know, nope. Does anyone know if you can do this in hotmail? I'll look into how I do that on their web page rather than bothering you about it. :-) If not, then it's yet another reason to stop using Hotmail :rolleyes:Apart from the fact all my friends have my hotmail account name and I'd have to pass on a new email address to everyone... I personally hate it, and have been using Gmail for ages now, I just forward that to my mail2web address, and it's a great solution that costs me nothing, other than data. Assuming hotmail can't be forwarded (I don't think it can), is there any reason to create a Gmail account? Why can I not just tell all my pals my new mail2web.com email name? What does Gmail give me that mail2web does not? Thanks for all the help! Blakey

Blakey Gmail gives you better spam filtering, more storage space, easier search for old emails, will always be free, and is far easier to use as a mail application through a browser. That said, when you reply to people on your device, it will say it's from mail2web, but I put in my sig file not to save that address, and just use the gmail one.
Guest Blakey Posted October 3, 2006 Report Posted October 3, 2006 Thanks for the help Alan. Much appreciated. Now, I know nothing of "push email" or how it works or how to set it up. I've looked on the mail2web site for advice but can't figure it out. Could anyone point me at a thread where its explained, or care to explain what I have to do to get mail2web mail automatically sent to my phone when it arrives, please? Many, many thanks! Blakey
Guest Blakey Posted October 3, 2006 Report Posted October 3, 2006 I have figured this out for myself using the mail2web knowledge base. Its not simple but not too hard. I'm very impressed all in all. Its syncing all my contacts, calendar and the like with their exchange server and allowing me to have email direct pushed onto my phone as soon as it arrives all in all this is pretty darn good. Just got to figure out if I can get hotmail to forward to this server or not now. If not, looks like I'm changing over to mail2web as my mail address. Thanks Blakey
