Selecting contacts to call on keypad by letter rather than number

When making a call the keypad seems only sensitive to numbers and not letters. Is there anyway of getting the keypad to search for contacts based on the letters that have been entered through the keypad?

Thanks.

If you are in the contacts app if you choose an input method like the software keyboard it will search the contacts using t9.

I was kinda hoping that there might be a way of doing it through the keypad without having to go into contacts.

If you start the phone application it does the same thing, i.e. open phone click the numbers but using the letters and it T9's the contacts.

Actually you have solved a problem for me! I have been using contacts and when using something like phonepad to input the letters it doesn't automatically T9 the contacts list but the phone app does AND the 'keys' are big enough to press with my stubby fingers.

However, I can see what you mean if the hard keyboard is open. It DOES do T9 lookup but ONLY for the letters that are assigned to a number key, i.e. press dot (1-0) and it gives you the choice of using the inputted number of inputted letter. Hmmm, must be a way to get it to accept a letter.

OK, this is blowing my mind now! If I press W or X from the today screen these letters open the phone application with t9 lookup or I can press dot+number to get it to open the phone and lookup/type the number. Why W or X??? Are there hidden keyboard shortcuts on the Vario II and if so can these be removed or reconfigured?

Hang on Dr Who. It doesn't work for me. The phone app doesn't T9 my contacts list. I do have pocket informant installed but that shouldn't make a difference. I'm using the custom version of mobile 5 achieved through taking the battery out while it's booting. Any idea how to activate T9?

I have Pocket Informant installed as well, although not active. Actually might have uninstalled it last night but after I checked this, I think.

Hmmm, T9 could be part of the operator ROM I suppose. I would guess you would just need to mount the external ROM and find which part contains the T9 install.

Does anyone have any ideas about why W and X cause the phone app to open when the hardware keyboard is out but none of the other letters do? Or how to make it work?

No but I'm wondering if I can persuade my contacts to change their names by deedpoll to take advantage of these two keys
