Guest Paulplex Posted October 6, 2006 Report Posted October 6, 2006 Morning all, Frontier - First Encounters I know its an old game, but I really liked it. Clever fellows on the internet have re-compiled the original game to make it work on Windows properly (since it was really a DOS game) and I still enjoy playing it. What I want to know - and what I can't seem to find the answer to yet - is if anyone has made a port for this game to work on Pocket PC's: I'd love to play this game again and considering it was written for a 320x240 resolution, it would be perfect on the M3100, especially with the keyboard. If anyone wants to play the PC version, take a look at http://jaj22.org.uk/jjffe/ - the game is now shareware so you might want to donate a few pennies if you like it - but has anyone seen a Pocket PC version around?
Guest Matt Kirby Posted October 6, 2006 Report Posted October 6, 2006 If there isn't a direct port to PPC you could give DOS emulation a go. I haven't tried it myself, but there are a couple of DOS emulators that might be able to play that game. I'm sure recommendations of particular emulators will be along shortly from other MoDaCoeans.
Guest RufusA Posted October 6, 2006 Report Posted October 6, 2006 I very much doubt you'll get a direct port of Frontier FE because of all of the problems with the PPC version of Elite: http://www.eliteppc.com/ I believe it may still be possible to become a beta tester though if it helps ;-) Another option that may be worth trying out is installing an Atari ST emulator i.e. CaSTCE and then trying the Atari version of the game(s). I know that people have run them [slowly] on older devices, so may work on the all conquering Hermes! Rufus.

Hiya, I was part of the Amiga camp than the hated Atari - and I've tried the UAE Amiga emulator port on my Hermes but it doesn't work properly: I think there is a bug with this on WM5 looking at the UAE forums. ...Unfortunately Elite III never made it to the Amiga or Atari however so I'll try the dos emulator route - I think there is a version of DOSBox for PPCs.
Guest Dr Who Posted October 6, 2006 Report Posted October 6, 2006 Will you please report back and let us know how you get on! Now you have sown the seed in my mind I REALLY want to play Frontier, waaaaaaayyyyyyyy too cool. Time to get my Elite status back!
Guest ingster Posted October 12, 2006 Report Posted October 12, 2006 If you like the old monkey island, day of the tentacle, simon the sorcerer etc and you have the originals you can download pocket scumm, where you can play the old point and click style games go to http://www.scummvm.org/ and see what you think, i've used it on my blue angel but not tried it on the hermes yet but the latest release is supportive of windows mobile 5
