Remapping buttons, how to overwrite links in ROM ?

Hi, I'm trying to remap the softbuttons on my HTC 8300, I know they are mapped to short_AP#, long_AP# etc. The problem I have is that my edits to these shortcuts are apparently ignored. I know that the shortcuts exist in the ROM and I think the phone is using the rom mappings instead of the ones I assign, does anyone know how to edit the ROM directly or prevent this behaviour, because it's really annoying the way it is now.

Hmm, apparently the long ones are not used, because any edits made to those do not fire.

I managed to edit the Short_AP# links, and those work. but Edits to the Long_AP# do not.

e.g

I have set short_AP4 to taskmanager, and long_AP to mute, when I press AP4 long I stil get taskmanager, it's like the long never fires.

Anyone know anything about this behaviour ?

The long_camera.lnk does seem to work, because I remapped that to video recording mode
