Guest nedge2k Posted October 8, 2006 Report Posted October 8, 2006 According to MSMobileNews, what you see above is set to be the look of the next Windows Mobile OS: Crossbow. Pieter Knook, a Microsoft Sr. VP, has commented that Microsoft plan to release an upgrade to their mobile platform yearly which is interesting and could mean a new OS with every yearly upgrade for pay monthly contracts. Knook has also commented that Crossbow will have strong links with Office 2007 and Exchange 12 as well as including the mobile version of Office Communicator, an Instant Messenger tool for enterprises. Google cache caught a leaked presentation which told us that Crossbow will be released to manufacturer in Q4 2006 ready for release in Q1/Q2 of 2007 and that the next operating system (codenamed "Photon") will be released to manufacturers in Q4 2007 ready for release in Q1/Q2 2008 (Photon is set to include a new, flexible shell with modular containers and utilise the "Yamazaki" CE kernel). Don't know about the rest of you but that looks damn sexy! Here's hoping it'll have some nice visual effects like Vista too (yeh, I know, highly unlikely - boo!) Not happy about the inclusion of that damned battery icon though! Source [MSMobileNews]
Guest Ingvarr Posted October 8, 2006 Report Posted October 8, 2006 (edited) It looks nice. Good design never harmed anybody. As for "visual effects" - may be bad idea, because it will just eat battery for the pointless eye candy (remeber, mobile devices have no accelerators to draw fireworks, and if they have an accelerator, it tended to be just another hungry mouth). But Iam both thumbs up for good graphics & UI design. It also will be very useful if MS will finally devise some built-in skinning standard, but I guess its too much to expect. Guest bennish Posted October 8, 2006 Report Posted October 8, 2006 i think i can hear wisbar skinners at work... at least i hope i can. lovely.
Guest Dr Who Posted October 8, 2006 Report Posted October 8, 2006 Already at least two wisbar advance skins for crossbow!
Guest sporkguy Posted October 8, 2006 Report Posted October 8, 2006 I hope to god there's more than one colour scheme - that Teal is horrendously ugly
Guest chucky.egg Posted October 8, 2006 Report Posted October 8, 2006 Don't know about the rest of you but that looks damn sexy! I'm viewing this on a smartphone, so forgive me if i'm missing something, but that just looks like a bog standard WM5 Today screen.
Guest awarner (MVP) Posted October 8, 2006 Report Posted October 8, 2006 It will do, graphically there is nothing really different. Crossbow is more of a system overhaul with a few new bits added.
Guest Ingvarr Posted October 8, 2006 Report Posted October 8, 2006 There are some significant and useful changes on the system level. But average users wont know about them, it mostly matters for programmers and system implementers.
Guest Crispy Posted October 9, 2006 Report Posted October 9, 2006 It also will be very useful if MS will finally devise some built-in skinning standard, but I guess its too much to expect. Yes, that would indeed be nice, but I very seriously doubt that's ever going to happen... and for the GPU, no, that's not gonna happen either. I mean, we're up to WM5 and they're still using CPU-powered "curtain-loading"; I can't recall a single other class of hardware devices that still do that :/
Guest nausea Posted October 9, 2006 Report Posted October 9, 2006 I hope its faster, more responsive and more stable than WM2003/WM5. And I hope current devices can upgrade to it if its coming out in Q1 or Q2 2007. Its hard to keep up with all the new stuff thats constantly coming out! You buy something now and in 2 months theres something new you want.
Guest Ingvarr Posted October 9, 2006 Report Posted October 9, 2006 and for the GPU, no, that's not gonna happen either. I mean, we're up to WM5 and they're still using CPU-powered "curtain-loading"; I can't recall a single other class of hardware devices that still do that :/ Its for the reason, you know. With current integration, every chip counts, and you dont include another chip that draws up to and above wattage of CPU just for "eye candy".
Guest awarner (MVP) Posted October 9, 2006 Report Posted October 9, 2006 And I hope current devices can upgrade to it if its coming out in Q1 or Q2 2007. That will be unlikely to happen. It's only companies like HP who release a update that you can buy. It's not in the networks interest to invest time and money in devices that will be obsolete when the new crossbow enabled devices are released.
Guest lukeap69 Posted October 9, 2006 Report Posted October 9, 2006 Unfortunately, I have to agree. But I hope i-mate will. lukeap 69
Guest Thermite Posted October 9, 2006 Report Posted October 9, 2006 hope it has a better ie version as ie4 on win mob 5.0 is next to useless not to mention the security issues
Guest YLA G Posted October 9, 2006 Report Posted October 9, 2006 any themedesigner that wants to copy that?
Guest nedge2k Posted October 9, 2006 Report Posted October 9, 2006 There's one available for Wisbar Advance (big res hog) already: http://www.lakeridgesoftware.com/forum/showthread.php?t=9264 ...and another comming soon: http://www.lakeridgesoftware.com/forum/showthread.php?t=9271 Why the hell they are calling them "photon" and "WM6" though....
Guest waroffice Posted October 10, 2006 Report Posted October 10, 2006 I hope to god there's more than one colour scheme - that Teal is horrendously ugly  I aggree, looks just like a different colour. Cant say its good or bad from a screenie!
Guest nickcornaglia Posted October 10, 2006 Report Posted October 10, 2006 Maybe it's just me but I dont see the big deal in this at all. Give me some more functionality and repaired functionality specs and I'll be happier.
Guest Paul (MVP) Posted October 10, 2006 Report Posted October 10, 2006 Likewise, it doesn't excite me... P
