Why won't my Media Player play .asx (asf) files?

I'm not being lazy - I've searched and searched around these forums - but I'm getting very frustrated. My Media Player won't play .asx files. Well, that's not entirely true. I have no problem watching stupid movie trailers. But when I try to connect to an Internet radio station (crhonixradio.com) I get an error, "Cannot play any items in the playlist. For additional information, on the Now Playing Screen, select and item, and then press Menu > Error Details." When I do that, the message is the same! The file is \My Documents\listen.asx. I normally use my SD card for the library, could that be the reason? Help me! (Oh, I have no problem listening to this station on my desktop PC).

EDGE is just a little faster than GPRS. However, I don't think speed is the problem, since, as I mentioned, I can listen to and watch other asx files at windowsmedia.com for example.

Hi, Stroochy,

The reason why your Windows Media Player will not play the station is because it's not a true WMA file.

Radio stations have found a trick with the newer versions of WMP on the PC where they can disguise a bog-standard mp3 stream and force it to play via Windows Media Player on the PC.

The problem here is that WMP on your mobile doesn't support mp3 streaming (and neither does WMP on the Mac, but radio stations don't care!). What I suggest you do is to download an mp3 player such as TCPMP, and from now on, use the Winamp/iTunes (.pls) stream on the station website. You should find that the radio station now plays.

I'm well aware of such tricks-of-the-trade, and have created a website (Radio4PDA) for mobile users to listen to (real) radio stations with little fuss. The URL is in my signature. Although not perfect, I've tried to reduce such numbers of false WMP streams. There are so many still present on there as I can't filter them all out myself, so please feel free to contact me via the website if you encounter any such streams.

Wow! Worked like a charm! You're the master, I bow humbly. Now that I have this TCPMP (acutally I had it before but I didn't find it very intuitive and so stupidly uninstalled it) can I get rid of Windows Media Player and free up some space? And is there supposed to be some kind of visualization going on in the TCMP screen? Mine is just black.

i really wouldnt wanna get rid of wmp if i were u. besides it just frees some space on ur phone, not the storage card. not even worth it.

No, there's no visualisation with TCPMP, which is a bit of a shame, since there's so much screen being unused.

I don't think it's possible to remove WMP, as it's in your ROM rather than RAM, so even if you try to remove it, it'll come back after a reset. (At least that's what happens on the Pocket PCs)

Well, thanks anyway. Now to figure out how to use TCPMP. Is there a manual somewhere? Now that I got that radio station to work, I'd like to have it set as a channel or something.

How about setting the stream URL as a favourite in Pocket IE?

TCPMP should launch off that.
