Hermes silicone skin

Tried one of the Silicone skins from ebay, with the idea of giving the phone a little protection when removing it from the case i use. Unfortunately it's just slightly too thick to go in the case (Berghaus GPS case) I use.

If anyone was wondering about them they fit fairly well (perhaps a tad looser on my Vario II than would be ideal but not really loose). Cut-outs for everything that needs cut-outs and thinner sections for buttons. keyboard still slides out, but this does leave a wall of case around the keyboard. It won't give as much protection as a proper case, but it's not bad.

I ordered one last week; I don't normally use a case with my mobiles, but I felt that wasn't an option with a less ruggedised device like the Hermes. I'll see if I end up selling mine on as well...

Does it keep the size of the device still quite small? I bought the proporta case and while good found it made the phone too big to carry round in a pocket etc.

It doesn't add much bulk - probably a couple of mm at most.

I'll be interested to hear what you think of this too - as I am also considering it.

Thanks

I'm just about to buy one of these having bounced my Vario off the tarmac 3 times in as many weeks :)

Is everyone who has one still happy with it, or found anything else that is nice and thin ?

Thanks

I was going to post an update.... I gave up on mine. In the end, I think it was the fiddliness of getting to the bottom D-pad key and bottom corner keyboard keys, along with it being slightly harder to pull out of my pocket due to the friction of the case. I never did get used to the shielded hardware keys either - I'd end up pressing the Voice Dial button instead of the Connection button.

I've now opted for a simple wrist strap, and no case: when in my pocket, it's easy to grab, and I can put it over my wrist (or usually a couple of fingers) if I'm wary of dropping it, such as when walking. As for protecting against wear and tear, I have a screen protector, and keep it in a pocket devoid of keys or coins, and it seems to be holding up pretty well.

If you're dropping your Vario, I don't think the silicone would help that much - I think it would pop out of the case too easily, or land screen-first (no protection here). You're better off with a full case... or something more rugged, like an E61 :D

Thanks for this. It's the corners that have taken a beating on mine rather than the screen - shirt pocket, and bent over ... bounce ! That and sliding out of my fleece pocket when walking down the road.

To it's crdit though, other than some dented plastic it's stll going strong, and I haven't even had to reallign the screen recently (tempting fate I know !)

Ouch!

I've been more cautious with my Hermes than my P910i; mostly because of the larger screen area, and plainer form. I suggest the same as me - use a jeans pocket, and attach a wrist strap so that it's easier to grab and take out :)

Got it yesterday. A few short notes(since I'm on an on-screen keyboard atm!)...

Pros

- Cheap! (7 inc P&P)

- Simply slips over keyboard half - easy to add\remove

- Makes Hermes feel more substantial, but little wider or heavier

- Good against rubbing on case

- Just as fast to access as caseless device - doesn't slow me down at all

- No cutouts for Power, Connection, Camera, OK, Voice buttons - but you can still just feel them, and get tactile feedback when pressing. Almost feels like a quality rubber-coated button!

Cons

- No real impact protection - too thin

- Edges obscure bottom edges of keyboard - you have to reach into the corners slightly. Makes my attempts at touch-typing harder

- Ditto for Windows/OK/Down on D-pad - hard to press

- Covered soft-buttons are hard to press - esp. Voice, which seems harder to feel too. I remapped this key to reduce the need to access it.

- Surface is smoothly-textured grey, rather than Matt-textured black.

Overall, I think I'll keep it. The niggle of the side buttons and down-D-pad is outweighed by the ease of frequent use (no Velcro/Poppers), and retaining pocketability.

Will post some pics when I can!

Hi,

I purchased a silicon case and screen guard combo on eBay for $1.99 US plus $5.95 shipping for my Hermes (C 8525). http://cgi.ebay.com/New-For-Cingular-8525-...1QQcmdZViewItem

The screen guard is excellent and easy to apply. The guard was fairly stiff and went on in one try with no bubbles. Luck on my part :) It is holding up fine after 30 days. It was from Japan by the packaging.

The silicon case was the same as all the others out their for the Hermes. Mine is the flat black one.

Your Pros and Cons are right on the spot. But one point no one has stated and the main point for me is that with this case you can lay the device on its back and not worry about scuffing up the camera lens, macro switch, flash and mirror or the back of the unit. With no cradle these areas take the hit most times in normal use.

I carefully cut away a small bit of the silicon that covered the lower section of the d-pad, send and receive buttons for much easier access.

On my case where the hardware buttons are instead of a cutout the inside is indented with a small protruding rubber nub, so I can feel the buttons and push them easy.

So I like both pieces and plan for hand/pocket use. My Krussel for the bike.

Good Day,
