Guest awarner (MVP) Posted October 16, 2006 Report Posted October 16, 2006 Losing volume controls can be due to changing homescreen themes that replace the volume screens. It is not a real replacement, but changes some of the registry keys. In HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shell\RAI. For volume there is an entry called VolDlg and the value points to the location of the bitmap to be used (BKBitmapFile). If you remove the homescreen, the bitmap used by that homescreen is gone but the registry key can remain unchaged and so pointing to a non-existent file. To fix the problem you need to change the value so it points back to the original bitmap. \windows\volume.gif (without hypens). You can also use the following cab file Home_Restore.CAB
