Phone Call Conversation and erroneous programs loading

Nice and easy;

When I make a call, my rather large ear always presses and changes the screen - often onto the alarm setting, which is really annoying as you can imagine esp as it has cancelled or set the alarm before...

Do any of you have any surefire methods to prevent this from happening please?

There are several things you can do:

You can simply hit the power button to turn the screen off after dialing or receiving a call - then when you are finished with the call just press the power button to turn the display on.

You can buy the phonealarm application that will automatically turn the screen off when in a call, (http://www.pocketmax.net/)

You can download the following free utility and assign it to a hardware button to turn the screen off.
