Pocketmac for WM5 is in beta testing

I have got a copy of this from Pocketmac and finally managed to get it installed OK but it doesn't see my PocketPC... It locates it fine using Device Locater but then does not see it when it is connected, nor does it sync.

Has anyone else tried it? When I installed it it said "not compatible with OSX less than 10.4" and I have 10.3.9 and no hope of getting 10.4 (work machine, have been told the hardware isn't compatible). But it installed anyway, and the documentation I was sent says it works on my OS (I have 10.3.9).

If you are interested in trying the beta version, they contacted me when I filled in their popup "what do you think of our site" box, but you could also try emailing them.

Hi Katie

I think the reason you'll need 10.4 is because it handles syncing in a different way. I use Missing Sync for my WM5 device and I think that requires 10.4 too. Sounds like your office are going to need to upgrade your hardware if it's too old to run Tiger (10.4).

Well, I've now enquired and it's actually a licensing problem (we haven't got enough licences for everyone to have 10.4 rather than my hardware is inadequate). Since they don't officially support - or require - pocketPCs then I doubt they are going to buy me a new licence. I'm already allowed administrator privileges on my office computer on the basis that I am computer savvy and am not going to break anything - most people aren't allowed to install their own software, even.

But I'm rather puzzled as to why PocketMac told me that 10.3.9 would do nicely when in fact only 10.4 would do. In their email to me:

In terms of Mac OS all our products are designed to work with 10.3 or

higher; so, if you are not using 10.3, you may want to...

Okay, they have now replied to me to say that the beta version does only work with 10.4 - but no word yet as to whether the final version will function with 10.3.9 - as the beta version also doesn't include Bluetooth or IR connectivity, there is a chance something might radically change.

If not, I'll be very annoyed - I suppose, theoretically, I should have checked before buying a WM5 pocket PC but I am pretty sure I wouldn't have been able to get all the information out of them before I got fed up with my old handheld and bought it anyway. If at all. Seeing as I haven't got it all yet.
