Guest stevejarvis Posted October 31, 2006 Report Posted October 31, 2006 Three days ago I upgraded my SPV C600 for an M3100. The phone and Orange's support for it have been terrible. The phone has never managed to make a GPRS connection. Orange customer support have been through the settings three times. We have swapped the SIM to my old phone and proved that it doesn't work there either so they have admitted that they must have screwed up the network provisioning. Apparently I will have to wait up to 4 days for them to correct this! The phone is terrible as well. WiFi connections are at best intermittent, when just 1m from the access point. The phone repeatedly loses the WEP key when trying to connect to a secure access point (I can now nearly remember the key I have entered it so many times). The phone loses pairing with my Bluetooth car kit and asks for the access code to be entered repeatedly - which is difficult to do whilst driving). Having once got the phone connected using usb to transfer contacts when I reconnect my PC claims "there is a fault in the usb device". No doubt uninstalling Active Sync and reinstalling will cure the problem for something between a few minutes and a few hours. The phone will make voice calls (although the quality is not great) but I could do that without spending a bundle of cash. Are they all this bad? Does anybody here know how to turn this heap of junk into something that does what it says on the box? Steve
Guest jimbouk Posted October 31, 2006 Report Posted October 31, 2006 They are not all like this. Most 3100 owners reckon they are the best device they have ever owned. You have the double whammy of a bad one and making the move from a smartphone to a ppc. First thing I would do is a hard reset. Go to settings, system tab and click clear storage - enter the code and let the device reset. Whilst it is rebooting, and entering the orange customisation, do not leave it plugged in to the pc. On the pc, go into active sync and delete any existing partnerships. Once the device has finished resetting and restarted itself, simply connect it to activesync and if that works, you can as usual get all your contact/calendar etc details across. Then customise the device the way you like it and hopefully the hard reset will have cleared out loads of bugs...as it sounds like you either have a real lemon or the original rom didnt take properly. On wifi, slide the performace slider all the way to performance. On network settings, just leave the network settings as the Orange cab puts them. Once they have turned on your GPRS/3G at the network, it should work fine. If you still have loads of problems, get them to replace it. Chances are your next one will be as good as the rest of us have.
Guest mandt Posted October 31, 2006 Report Posted October 31, 2006 It sound to me like you could have a faulty unit. as I don't think anyone else has had the same problems as you (certainly not all at the same time) Take it back to the shop you bought it from and ask for a new handset

Wi-fi isn't stunning but it doesn't seem that bad - what is your power v signal set at? Only had one failure to recognise device on active sync and a soft-reset cured it - seems very stable - I connect 4 or 5 times a day. Are you using the new version of AS?
Guest stevejarvis Posted October 31, 2006 Report Posted October 31, 2006 I'm sure that the 3G/GPRS problems are down to Orange. I can accept that WiFi performance will be inferior to a lap top (given the power and antenna constraints. What is total unacceptable is that the device loses wifi and Bluetooth associations at random.

I'm guessing its down to the ROM.... you could source another operators ROM and flash that to your phone (i have the i-mate JASJAM ROM if your interested) which would more than likely iron out the bugs you are talking about.... Guest jchamier Posted October 31, 2006 Report Posted October 31, 2006 What is total unacceptable is that the device loses wifi and Bluetooth associations at random. I have the bluetooth issue (hardly used wifi) on my MDA Vario II. I have the bluetooth paired with my TomTom Go 500 as a handsfree car kit. Works well. I commute drive from home, to work in Winchester, down the M3, pretty much between 65 and 75mph, as its pretty busy, about 40miles each way. Mostly as I pass basingstoke, the phone switched between 3G (home side) and GPRS (away). This also seems to kill bluetooth !! The TomTom screen will show that the phone is disconnected (phone questionmark icon), and the blue light on the Vario stops flashing. If I hit comm manager and hit the bluetooth button, it all starts working again. Is this the same as you're seeing with the M3100 ? I'm wondering if its a bluetooth version issue, as the tomtom had no issues with non WM5 phones, nor the SPV C600
