Guest M1TNT Posted November 6, 2006 Report Posted November 6, 2006 I think tonight's Gadget Show is a bit of a must see No only are they going to show is the what's what in gadgets but they are going to start a campaign to persuade governments and local councils to provide free wi-fi access to the masses. Loads of places around the world provide free wi-fi access in public places - unlike rip-off-Britain that charges the earth for wi-fi access. £5 for an hours wi-fi access - come on! Get real - there are companies out there that are putting the infrastructures in but are they really supported at this price ? I don't think so ! So watch the show and sign up to any campaign that aims to get us free wi-fi so we can get onto our fave web site ( MoDaCo rules! ) with out it costing us an arm or a liver or a kidney Wi-Fi offers us freedom so lets make it free!

Free wi-fi would be nice, but as I live in an area where we still can't recieve Channel 5 (no analogue signal, no Freeview yet) I won't be watching.
Guest chucky.egg Posted November 6, 2006 Report Posted November 6, 2006  Maybe the first campaign should be to increase the areas that can get Ch5
Guest M1TNT Posted November 6, 2006 Report Posted November 6, 2006 :( Maybe the first campaign should be to increase the areas that can get Ch5 Oh dear me - not good I do think you can watch it via the Ch5 website - loads of TV channels are starting to do that - you can get re-runs of BBC shows so I am sure the rest can do it too. worth a look me thinks
Guest Confucious Posted November 6, 2006 Report Posted November 6, 2006 WiFi eats batteries! What's wrong with using 3G?
Guest M1TNT Posted November 6, 2006 Report Posted November 6, 2006 WiFi eats batteries! What's wrong with using 3G? well cost ? - if you get free wi-fi would you not used it - or would you still use your 3g that's coverage is a bit ropey at best ?
Guest Confucious Posted November 6, 2006 Report Posted November 6, 2006 At home I use 3G rather than WiFi. Never had a problem with 3G coverage. On the train WiFi is free but I don't use it coz of the battery drain. 3G costs me £5.625 / month and I pay for it anyway so it's easier just to use it.
Guest benzo Posted November 6, 2006 Report Posted November 6, 2006 WiFi eats batteries! What's wrong with using 3G? Well for starters, I am not allowed to Skype on Web'n'Walk on T-mob. Wifi would give me that ability to make PC-to-PC phone calls and even cheap calls to international phone numbers. That's a big plus for me. And indeed, there are times when 3G network is a bit ropey- even in London. So I think, in this case, wifi would definately complement the 3G network rather than replace.
Guest Confucious Posted November 6, 2006 Report Posted November 6, 2006 Seems reasonable to me Benzo. Don't think I'd ever use it tho. Do Pier to Pier still provide free WiFi in Brighton?
Guest willieturnip Posted November 6, 2006 Report Posted November 6, 2006 ok...seriously...if i hear one more person talking about 3g being GOOD i swear i will punch them streight in the mouth :D the coverage just makes it downright useless...and its slow at the quickest of times :)
Guest Confucious Posted November 6, 2006 Report Posted November 6, 2006 ok...seriously...if i hear one more person talking about 3g being GOOD i swear i will punch them streight in the mouth :P the coverage just makes it downright useless...and its slow at the quickest of times :) Ahhh! you're still with Orange. Explains a lot :D
Guest Posted November 6, 2006 Report Posted November 6, 2006 Watched the prog, and while it's always a good view, there was no mention of free wi-fi! If I could get 3g at home I'd go with that, else I use wi-fi at home only. Wouldn't use it at hotspots due to security concerns.

MMMM - I did notice that - :) The synopsis I had for the program said that there was going to be a campaine for free Wi-Fi but it was not on the show :D Oh well better luck next time!
Guest Pondrew Posted November 7, 2006 Report Posted November 7, 2006 ok...seriously...if i hear one more person talking about 3g being GOOD i swear i will punch them streight in the mouth :D the coverage just makes it downright useless...and its slow at the quickest of times :) A little strong don't you think?! <_< And I've no idea what you're talking about 3G being slow. Having experienced HSDPA data speeds in 3G coverage areas (which incidentally for me in Greater London that seems to be everywhere that HAS T-Mobile coverage) I don't think I'd ever go back to 2G/2.5G speeds...
Guest Confucious Posted November 13, 2006 Report Posted November 13, 2006 It's tonight's show! on now.

Guest awarner (MVP) Posted November 13, 2006 Report Posted November 13, 2006 I like the competition prizes but would never enter as I don't believe in the charge they make. Even logging on the FIVE site they charge you for entering.
Guest Posted November 13, 2006 Report Posted November 13, 2006 I'd love to enter the competitions, but the questions are always just so hard....... ;-)
