Is there a utility or some shortcuts I can add to the today screen that will let me switch bluetooth/wireless on and off? There's some nice icons in the standard icon set but I can't find a way to put them on the today screen.

its simple to add a bluetooth and wireless plugin

Fire up a registry editor and navigate to the following key:

HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Today\Items

Add the key "Wireless" (with quotes)

and give it the following values:

String, DLL = netui.dll

DWORD, Enabled = 1

DWORD. Flags = 0

DWORD, Options = 0

DWORD, Order = 1

DWORD, Type = 4

Close the editor and you're done

Then go to Start>Settings>Today>Items and the plugin should be there for you to select,

You may need to unselect it and then reselect it to make it show on the today screen

Be warned some people have added the plugin successfully but cannot select it, although it is still a good 'indicator'

Thanks, I've tried this before but couldn't select it, I'm also happy with the icon along that top that indicates whether wireless is on and the flashing blue light for bluetooth.

What I want to do is have pretty much stylus free operation for the functions I use a lot so I want niice big icons on the Today screen I can press. I've found the shortcut for commgr.exe but can't seem to get it to work from the Today screen, which would be a compromise but I'd quite like to be bale to toggle WiFI and Bluetooth using icons.

Your best bet might be to buy and application launcher program - I use SBSH iLauncher, but SPB do a similar program that's also pretty good.

My screen a few days back - the tabbed bit is iLauncher:
