Got one of these from Ebay. Syncs fine, appears to be charging but doesn't. Tried on Laptop, Desktop and docking station. DOES charge from the car using the supplied adaptor. Anybody any suggestions?

Thanks,

Joe

You might find that the phone will charge "slowly" if it is switched off when connected via the USB cable to a PC or laptop, but if the battery is low and the phone is switched on it won't charge, this is because the USB connection on a computer has a restricted power output of 500mA and the phone requires more than this when it is charging and switched on (the standard mains charger provides 1A (1000mA)).

The phone will charge ok when using the car adaptor as this is not restricted and can supply whatever current the phone requires.

It should also be noted that damage could possibly be caused to your computer / laptop if you overload the USB components by attempting to take more than 500mA, therefore, if using the USB connection to charge your phone it is best to keep it switched off.

("To be compliant with USB specifications (Rev.1.1) a high-power function must not draw more than 500mA from the bus during normal operation")

So I can't use it to charge from a PC (doesn't work when off), and I can't use it to sync because it might overload my USP port and damage it?! No use whatsover then!

Well, I have one of these cables too, and despite the power restrictions on the USB port I still use mine to sync to my laptop when away from home, I also use it to charge my SPV (with the SPV switched off) which it seems to do ok.

If you want to charge your SPV, connect the USB cable when the phone is switched on and then switch the phone off. If you connect the cable when the SPV is off you might find that it will switch itself on and enter the set-up screen, and trying to switch it off again will result in it just restarting back to the set-up screen again.

I've used the lead quite a lot to sync and move files into / out of the SPV and (touch wood) have had no problem with the USB power restrictions, although if I was going to charge it from empty I would keep it switched off when charging to avoid any possible USB damage.

The main reason I bought the lead was to use it to charge the SPV when in the car, which it does very well (with the SPV on or off).
