Any AKU3 rumours?

Anyone heard any more rumours on when TMob would be shipping AKU3 for the Vario II?

It's all very quiet!

Here's a rumour - there won't be an AKU3 update for the Vario II.

Oh, sorry, you wanted SUBSTANTIATED rumours? Can't help on that one :D

As with all AKUs tho, think about the motivation for the device supplier / operator to provide it, then you'll determine whether it's likely to appear.

Is there much motivation for T-Mobile to release AKU3 for the Vario II? IMHO - no... I think it's more likely someone else (e.g. HTC) provides an image for another device (e.g. TyTN) - that we naughtily flash onto our devices.

That's if an upgrade appears at all.

Just my thoughts :)

Interesting points. I see what you mean.

Obviously, AKU2 was a bit different as Direct Push is quite a major thing, but then look how long operators took to get that released!

Exactly... don't expect AKU3 to be another AKU2 :)

Without getting any hopes up - and I'm sure others have more info than me - a chat with a friendly tech support lady today 'revealed' that she's aware an update will be released 'soon', but 'soon' in her terms were 4-6 weeks. And no word if this is AKU3.

Again, I know I'm probably not up to speed here, but AFAIK there's no TMO image on XDA-Forums to fall back to, so I'm going to avoid flashing mine with anything else for now until there is.

Just got an email from TMob saying:

"There are plans to release it in the future, but at present we have no timescale for the release."

T-Mobile UK are usually very good at providing updates for their devices (with the exception being the SDA II which, like all HTC Hurricane Smartphones was totally neglected). I'm quite confident there'll be an update but who knows how new a build of WM5 it'll bring.

i'm sure ms claimed that with wm5 there was the possibility of updating parts of the os without a complete rom rebuild.

wish they would come good with this one as buying a new device just to get an updated version of wm is ridiculous.

wm users should get a license key and given a opportunity to pay for upgrades much like desktop versions of windows

^ easy tiger, do we not pay enough for these phones as it is :)

Lets not forget that there are at least two parties involved in rom updates. The network or device suppliers feed back bugs and issues to MS, MS then decide if an update is required (and possible), if so then they do the OS work and release it to the network/supplier, who then test it, customise it (to take into account their own customisations on the device/original rom) and then test it - before releasing it to their customers.

Because of this, updates don't usually come out for minor issues. If there are major issues, then there would be one.

If you really want to tweak your device to get the "latest" rom because of a problem with the rom you currently have, it is usually possible to find one designed for another brand of the same device and use some clever patches and apps to get it on to your device.

I have to say that I have been very impressed with the M3100's standard rom from Orange. I soft reset it about once a month and only hard reset once (and that was after seriously mucking about with it in the first week).

I'm shocked. I soft reset mine probably (at least) once a day on average. Sometimes I have to reset it three times in a row before it will stabilise.

I'm with Jim on this, my Vario II is really very stable - by far the most stable first release WM ROM I have ever used in fact. Might suggest you are running an unhappy piece of software Nik?

Whats causing you to soft reset? (ie whats the symptom you are trying to cure?)

I have only put SPB pocketplus 3.1, copilot and Opera on mine. Other than that and a few of the tweaks - such as clock on titlebar, its pretty much standard.

I keep wondering if I should hard reset it - as I always found that previous devices slowed down and became a little unresponsive over time - and although it was gradual, a hard reset once every couple of months made me realise that I had got used to it getting slower and slower - but with the M3100 I haven't hard reset it since the first week and I have had it months now.

Yes we do that's why a cheap ROM upgrade would be much preferable to buying a new device just to get the latest version of windows mobile.

There are two parties involved in a complete ROM rebuild. I have heard Microsoft talk about releasing updates to the os over the internet in much the same way windows update works for the desktop. Not being a complete ROM rebuild the network customization stays in place cutting the network out of the loop and resulting in quicker updates for everyone.

If you buy a network branded device, you are paying nothing (or nearly nothing) for the device itself due to subsidies.

The MSFP was rumoured to be a roll up update (and thus not a completely new rom build)...but when it arrived it was a full rom version. I can only imagine that they would go to the trouble of setting up a windows-update type service if there were real security risks and they needed to develop frequent patches and fixes. Remember they didn't launch windows update to resolve users bugs - they did it to plug secuirty flaws...whatever they may have said at the time.

Agreed. But i bet you there are quite a few updates and probably a whole new os before my contract runs out.

The next OS is some way away...and there will only be updates if the network and MS deem it necessary. As I said above, my 3100 is rock solid reliable and even if there were any rom updates, I would wait and let a few other people try them for a month or two before mucking up what is a good rom.

With 18 month contracts becoming more popular i'd hazard a guess that i and others from this forum will be trying to hack Windows Mobile 6 onto our hermes variants before the contract runs out.

However I agree the rom on my vario ii is very stable and i have no reason at all to update it at the mo. Just think MS could at least give us some kind of upgrade path that's all.

Indeed, this Vario 2 ROM has been REALLLLLLLLLLy stable (crazy for a WM device!) and I fairly rag my sytem. I only have to soft reset when I absolutely cain it, and even then usually if I'm a little bit patient it sorts itself out and bam: we carry on.

Crazily better than my 2i, I had to treat it so gingerly sometimes. Ah, I do love that thing.

I always found that, right from the get go, SPB products realllllllly lag up my devices, in the end I just uninstalled everything SPB excepting SPB Full Screen Keyboard (which I still have installed on my Hermes, even if I hardly ever use it, cause I can't allllllways be bothered to push out the keyboard or just want to show off the touchscreen's capabilities) - SPB Pocket+ killed my 2i, and I'm pretty sure it'd rag my Hermes stupid. They're not very well written programs. I had all sorts of problems that directly stemmed from installing SPB stuff onto my 2i, which is a shame, cause I actually paid for them and all. Oh well.

SPB Pocketplus 3.1 seems to work fine on mine...but I think that some third party software houses products conflict with each other.

IE its not really their fault or MS's - its just that when certain combinations are used - they bugg each other.

I found the same myself; I hard-reset it, and am part-way through rebuilding it, and it's been better.

As I installed apps, I found one that seemed to affect speed and startup stability was Fitaly v4.0 (touchscreen-optimised pop-up keyboard). It's their first version for WM2005, so it could have a few bad bugs in it.

The HTC website has started to show signs of software updates. The P3600 has a ROM Update already available and the Tytn support page now has a software updates pages, although nothing listed on it as yet.

The only problem is they ask for your IMEI to verify the download is for a vaild item, and I guess that if you have a network branded phone the IMEI will be different and you won't be able to download it. So looks like we are going to have to wait until the networks update their ROM, if ever, or hope some nice people here can assist us!?!
