Guest Paul (MVP) Posted November 12, 2006 Report Posted November 12, 2006 You heard it here first! The MDA Compact III, based on the HTC Artemis, is now available from T-Mobile UK! The device, which has a host of innovative features such as integrated GPS, a FM radio and the unusual 'RollR' control mechanism, is available to order immediately on the T-Mobile UK website. The device is identical to the HTC P3300 reviewed here, apart from the fact that integrated WiFi MAY have been dropped (we're still awaiting confirmation of this, as we have conflicting reports). The device is available from FREE to £159.99, and comes in at a bargain £19.99 on a FlexT 35 web'n'walk tariff. I am ordering a device right now for my better half, so expect a full review feature in the next few days... although i'm not expecting to have changed my opinion of the RollR (see review link above!) :) P [update 13/11/06 09:00: The MDA Compact III is now AWOL from the T-Mobile site - most likely due to the small intial allocation of units being sold out...] [update 14/11/06 09:00: The MDA Compact III is now BACK on the T-Mobile site - with all mention of WiFi removed!]
Guest thecresta Posted November 12, 2006 Report Posted November 12, 2006 Hi Paul, Although there is no mention of Wi-Fi on the 'Specification' page, it says on the 'Overview' it is included - "Keeping up with your emails is simple and you can surf the internet with web‘n’walk. It has 128 MB of internal memory and a microSD card slot for expansion, plus a two mega-pixel digital camera with zoom, flash LED and video capture, an MP3 player, FM radio, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and USB cable connectivity." Or have I missed something (again)? :)
Guest mutleyboy Posted November 12, 2006 Report Posted November 12, 2006 i noticed that too. thats the reason i held off ordering one, as everywhere on the net says the t-mob version doesnt have the wifi, but the t-mob site itself says it does
Guest Paul (MVP) Posted November 12, 2006 Report Posted November 12, 2006 Interesting... well i'll let you know when mine arrives! :) P
Guest Shuflie Posted November 12, 2006 Report Posted November 12, 2006 Seems strange that they would tell you that TT Navigator 6 is pre installed for you then not say what size of SD card it comes with. Also strange that they don't make more of the fact it comes with Navigator 6 in the name of the phone, I would have expected something along the lines of "T-Mobile MDA Compact III with TomTom Navigator 6". Or is there any chance that they have either messed up the device overview page completely or just not told their marketing department about a feature that would have the phones jumping of the shelves? I would have thought that TomTom was a brand with better recognition amongst the public than CoPilot.
Guest Paul (MVP) Posted November 12, 2006 Report Posted November 12, 2006 Maybe it's a 'taster' version like the P3300 can be, with just 1 free city map? P
Guest Swampie Posted November 12, 2006 Report Posted November 12, 2006 Maybe it's a 'taster' version like the P3300 can be, with just 1 free city map? P Or likely, just the TT software, with no maps!

Guest Paul (MVP) Posted November 13, 2006 Report Posted November 13, 2006 Just had a mail saying I should receive my handset tomorrow! P
Guest richard_d Posted November 13, 2006 Report Posted November 13, 2006 Just had a mail saying I should receive my handset tomorrow! P Had a look at one in the local T-Mobile shop - swap the awful controls for a d-pad and side scroll-wheel and it would feel okay, but I couldn't get on with the wheel and trackball at all. The assistant didn't seem to think it had wi-fi or GPS installed, but then she hadn't heard of HDASP...
Guest Paul (MVP) Posted November 13, 2006 Report Posted November 13, 2006 It'll be interesting to see how my other half gets on. She's been using a JAMin on Orange, and loves it to bits, but wants to make the switch to T-Mo for Web'n'Walk... and was considering a MDA Compact II as her JAMin is now dead :D Between us we determined that she pretty much never uses any hardware buttons and always gets the stylus out, so we went for the MDA Compact III and I gave her the Treo 750v as a temporary device (which she hates btw, she's not a thumboard person). Unfortunately, contrary to what she said, i've noticed she DOES use the dpad, so she might hate the MDA Compact III... we'll see! If she does, I think i'll be getting her JAMin repaired and keeping the MDACIII for myself as a CamerAware test mule or something :) If only the Herald was out already, I think she'd like that. She has no need for 3G (and we don't get it much round here or where she travels anyway), so that could be perfect. P
Guest richard_d Posted November 13, 2006 Report Posted November 13, 2006 HDASP? Me neither :) P Stylus slip :D
Guest welshmikie Posted November 13, 2006 Report Posted November 13, 2006 Hi guys ive got a MDA compact 3. and when the tmobile auto customisation kicks in it removes the option for wifi and also removes it from the com manager. iv had this confirmed by an engineer. also its probably been removed off the website due to this fact as i know they have them in stock.
Guest Paul (MVP) Posted November 13, 2006 Report Posted November 13, 2006 If that IS the case (seems unlikely tho) then i'll have reversed that tomorrow :) P
Guest welshmikie Posted November 13, 2006 Report Posted November 13, 2006 If that IS the case (seems unlikely tho) then i'll have reversed that tomorrow :) P how would you be able to do that?
Guest Paul (MVP) Posted November 13, 2006 Report Posted November 13, 2006 Well, i'll just look at what the t-mobile customisation does, then create a CAB / application to do the opposite. Easy really :) P
Guest BrownSource Posted November 13, 2006 Report Posted November 13, 2006 New member today so pls... saw the compact 3 on T-mob site on sat night, called to enquire about an upgrade on Sunday and was told there are plenty in stock. I also asked if WiFi disabled, what you get for tomtom etc and guy was pretty unaware of it even being available and had to go off and check the site! I seen on other forums / news sites that T-mob in Germany have disabled wifi yet Austria hasn't. All sounds a bit odd that its disappeared off their website already (T-mob don't like using out of stock indicator?) seems a bit odd that tomtom inclusion is directly against their partnership with co-pilot, so wouldn;t be surprised if no map included at all just coming to the end of my 1st 18mth contract with t-mob - does ne1 know how generous they r to upgraders? thx
Guest Paul (MVP) Posted November 13, 2006 Report Posted November 13, 2006 It's all very odd IMHO, but assuming mine arrives tomorrow, maybe we'll know the truth at least around WiFi / TomTom! If the MDACIII is in retail as well as the online store, the only reason I can think of for it not being online is stock? P
