problem with contacts app and index popup

Does anyone know how to get rid of the index popup you get, when scrolling through contacts?

I'm sure it's handy if you only have a few contacts, but I have 1500. I use my Hermes for business, after all. Anyhow, the problem is, I have over 100 contacts in the "N" letter alone. If I want to get to somewhere in the middle, I have to hold the down key, wait a second, let it up, wait, hold it down, wait a second, and so on.

Otherwise, that annoying index pops up, and I find myself scrolling through a choice of what letters I want to move it. Basically, I can't _get_ to my contacts, without taking about 10x longer to do so, because of the index popup....

Any help appreciated...
