2125 Intermittent Internet Connectivity (MediaMax vs PDA Connect)

Well, as the topic says...

My Cingular 2125 has had internet problems for months. Cingular started with refunding me the cost of the service (MediaMax Bundle), and then replaced my 2125 (thinking it was a handset problem). Got a new phone, and... same problem. I browse/research the net ALOT from my phone, and this is getting really annoying.

While attempting to go to any web page, from multiple counties in California, after I click on a link, it will say "Connecting", then "Loading", (and then would usually say "Opening"), but instead it hangs and times out with the alert of no connectivity, and to try again (even with having full signal and "E" for EGDE network converage). I'm confused...

I called Cingular today, and they transfer me all over the place, only for them to tell me that I need to get the PDA connect plan (and additional costs for texting and pic sending), and I went through the roof. The phone worked fine for months with the MediaMax bundle, and just all the sudden, it started hanging all the time. I've been all over this site ad others, with no similar problem.

ANY IDEAS ??????

I have been having the same problems on mine in the Colorado Springs/Denver area, as has my brother with the same handset model. On another forum there was discussion that the intermittent coverage is because Cingular is switching the towers to the 3G configuration, which is supposedly what is making our coverage crappy. I did install the "unofficial radio update" found here:

http://www.modaco.com/index.php?act=Post&a...amp;qpid=783863

but I don't know if the download is still available. It seems to have helped, I do not see nearly as many hangs and errors with it. The only thing it has done was occasionally not allow a call to go thru correctly - it would tell me I was connected, but never heard any ringing in the earpiece or anyone on the other end once I was "connected". One other thing you could try is to change the primary and secondary DNS's to a valid address (there are forums on this, I think on a different website though, so google for DNS Error Smartphone and you should find a place to get the settings.)

Hope this helps.

btw I have the mediamax bundle as well, I wouldn't switch to the PDA connect.

I'll give the link a shot and see if it improves any. I'll post results.

Thanks for any further input or advice. It's much appreciated.

My reliability got better once I installed the Tornado Radio Update covered in this forum elsewhere. It's a non-destructive ROM update that just improves some issues with the radio code. Also make sure you're on the latest 2125 ROM before doing this upgrade.

Only one major problem. I cant seem to find a source to download that radio update from. Where can I get it from? I think my phone meets the profile of needing the update (Or at least I think it might be able to make some sort of difference). If anybody can post a link that would be awesome.

Try this link:

http://www.megaupload.com/?d=OHQAHBEZ

Also, if the radio doesn't work, you can revert to the older version with this one:

http://www.megaupload.com/?d=LAW3BO4Y

and if all else fails, reinstalling the ROM update from Cingular etc. will get rid of the radio update.

Hope it works, let me know if the megaupload links are bad.

Is this gonna' wipe out all my data on my phone (all programs/pics/messages that Activesync doesn't handle)? This looks like a ROM update (as in.... ROM replacement). I thought there was one that would just replace the radio version without wiping out all the data (flashing). Am I using the right one? And thanks for posting the link to the aforementioned items.

No, this just updates the radio. It looks and acts like a ROM update, but your data and settings will all be intact at the end, not to worry. That goes for both the radio update and the rollback version, if you need to revert back to your existing version.

Well, I gave it a try twice. As soon as I get through all the warnings, and begin the process to update the ROM, it immediately crashes Activesync, and turns the phone's screen red, green, and blue and has some text on the screen (can get it again if needed). Luckily, I was able to recover by removing the battery and it came back to normal. It didn't manage to fix anything, but I'm left wondering if there is a version problem or possible incompatibility.

How long did you wait before pulling the battery? I have done this a few times, and it does exactly what you say - although it doesn't "crash" activesync, it simply disconnects. Then the phone goes into the boot loader screen (the red, blue and green) for about 30 seconds, and after that the install starts with a progress bar on the phone screen and the computer screen. After that the radio is updated. So, I might suggest to wait a little longer before you pull the battery?

Well, just to keep everybody informed of the progress:

I waited for about 3 minutes during the update process, but it still didn't work. The computer dropped the ActiveSync connection, and displayed a window that said:

"SmartPhone ROM Update Utility 2.00.2

ERROR 294: Invalid Vendor ID

This update cannot be used for your Smartphone. Please check your update utility."

The phone screen was Red, Green, Blue, White (top to bottom), and read as follows:

Red screen:

"Tornado RUU

IPL 2.00

Tornado

SPL 2.00.0013"

Green screen:

"Tornado IU"

Blue screen:

(no text)

White screen:

"USB"

After it read those things for a while, I determined it wouldn't work, so I unplugged the phone and had to pull the battery for it to restart. Any OTHER ideas?

Also, I have successfully determined that my 2125 IS INDEED suffering from the "Searching..." radio problem. When I have connectivity problems, I go to SETTINGS... PHONE... NETWORK, and then select MENU, and FIND A NEW NETWORK. Upon doing so, sometimes it will just say "Searching...", even though it reads all 4 bars and EGDE network. So I think this definitely defines the radio problem. So now I just need to find out why the Tornado Radio Update doesn't work with my phone (?).

HELLLLLLLLPPPP!!!! (lol)

Oh, shoot, is your phone app-unlocked and all? That may be the problem if it isn't. There are a couple of ways you could try to get it to unlock, first you should do the app-unlock as discussed on the first entry of this thread:

http://www.modaco.com/Cingular-2125-Everyt...ow-t235408.html

then, try running a program called SDA_ApplicationUnlock, which you should be able to fnd on this forum. I run both of these wehenever I hard-reset my phone, and have not had a problem with the radio updates, so hopefully this will do the trick for you as well.

Good Luck!

Well, I tried both, and unfortunately, it keeps doing the same thing. I was really hoping that would fix the installation issues, but after each try it just immediately disconnects the ActiveSync connection and closes the program. After that, the red, green, blue screen pops up on the phone. I'm really getting frustrated at Cingular, because I get absolutely no help from them. So, as the world turns... you guys (and gals) are my only resort to a satisfactory (at best) Smartphone.

Any (other) ideas? Lol.
