Guest Paul (MVP) Posted November 21, 2006 Report Posted November 21, 2006 Well it's not even officially announced by Microsoft yet, it still doesn't have an official name (although 'Windows Mobile 6' is being banded around), and it's known by it's codename 'Crossbow'... but Mobile Review have just published a very extensive review of the forthcoming Windows Mobile Operating System! The review, which can be found here, includes a wealth of screenshots and an overview of many of the new features in the new operating system. I'm speechless :), amazed that a review this thorough could be out in the wild this early! Still, it is, and there's some great features coming in crossbow i'm really excited about, including HTML mail support and Smart Filtering on mail! P

P Thanks for that - it's not earth shattering enough for me to be desperately wanting my next device to have it (or for their to be an upgrade available) but the improvements to the mail side of things, and the shortcuts are nice.
Guest jcjdoss Posted November 21, 2006 Report Posted November 21, 2006 Is this definatly 6 or the rumored 5.5. I've heard Crossbow is the code name for 5.5

Guest creamhackered Posted November 21, 2006 Report Posted November 21, 2006 Nothing amazing but there's some good improvements. Interesting that they're now going to offer Windows Update for Windows Mobile - about time!

One one hand I am happy, on the other I know they will eventually disable my ability to flash my ROM.

You can guarantee that most operators will disable windows update to make you buy new devices and new contracts
Guest Ingvarr Posted November 21, 2006 Report Posted November 21, 2006 "Windows Update" is just a name. Nobody said that Microsoft will populate it - it can be just another name for optional manufacturer-provided update service. Its even in WM5, called "Download Agent". Manufacturers choose to ignore it :)
Guest jcjdoss Posted November 21, 2006 Report Posted November 21, 2006 You can guarantee that most operators will disable windows update to make you buy new devices and new contracts I don't know about that. Microsoft is really touchy about messing with their security, and disabling the Update is basically disabling their security/anti-piracy. Anyone think well see WGA in our phones. I do
Guest Ingvarr Posted November 21, 2006 Report Posted November 21, 2006 (edited) Windows Mobile is not Windows XP Windows Mobile distributed to endusers not by Microsoft, but by device manufacturers, and only as part of hardware devices. There is no "Windows Mobile distributive for users". Its distributed to manufacturers in source form, and they customize and compile it for their devices. So its logical if Microsoft will offload the update service (and waive update responsibility) to manufacturers too. Even if it still will be called "Windows" Update. Microsoft can provide hookup central trackers, servers & hosting though. You wont see WGA on your phone, because there is no way to get the Windows Mobile separate from the phone, and when you bought the phone, you already paid for legal copy of Windows Mobile. Guest nausea Posted November 21, 2006 Report Posted November 21, 2006 I hope HP offers an update for the 6900s, I want Windows Live Messenger Mobile!
Guest argh Posted November 21, 2006 Report Posted November 21, 2006 From that review, it seems to say that WM5 can synchronise call history. If so (and I haven't misunderstood), could someone please say how? :) I miss the Smart Journal functionality that I used in 2003SE (any news on the open source WM5 compatible version, Paul?)
Guest Leaskovski Posted November 22, 2006 Report Posted November 22, 2006 I just hope that they add the option of diverting all audio to the BT stack. I dream when i can have my navigation instruction pumped to my car speaks when an instruction is given. Not constant streaming.

If so (and I haven't misunderstood), could someone please say how? :) Without giving out too much, it's part of the Windows Live - it's saved in the central database - once you log on using your Live account, you can sync to any device that supports it. So make sure your Live password is strong enough!
Guest tamirtheredlion Posted February 2, 2007 Report Posted February 2, 2007 I only have one question. Will the upadte really be better? I mean sure the software is better, but I have a T-mobile MDA. So If I download this update, will I lose more memory? Will it be worth the memory loss, just for rss news feed and a new look? I look the look of my phone right now, so will it be albe to still convert back? Will I have to overclock my MDA, just to run it? These are questions that still elude me. Like Vista is nice and has a nice interface with some innovative functions. But It's obvious, that the software needs better hardware to run. I already spent the price of a ps3 for a phone. Do I really want to buy a whole new one? Now I'm for the updates and all, but if it's just a look and not nothing that will really enhance the performance, such as speed and so fourth. Than why do I want it? I seriously like my MDA. If there was a any kind of problems, it would probaly be error reporting (if any errors happened) and the camera. Basically nothing software wise, but more hardware. So do I like it? Yes! Is it better for my MDA? Dunno. Will I have to buy a whole other phone, after less than a year of having my current one? Liek I don't plan on having a new phone, until it's perfected like the MDA. Thats my two cents.
