Guest Paul (MVP) Posted November 27, 2006 Report Posted November 27, 2006 I will be shortly be posting my review of the HTC P4350 (HTC Herald). In advance of this, this thread is an opportunity for you to ask me anything at all about the device, and i'll try and answer it! Packing a QVGA screen, WiFi, QWERTY thumboard and a 2 megapixel camera into a body that's slightly THINNER than the HTC Prophet (pictured below)... the device looks set to be a hit, despite lacking 3G radios or a super fast processor. It's a Prophet with a keyboard, or a thin Wizard, depending on how you look at it! :) P
Guest nickcornaglia Posted November 27, 2006 Report Posted November 27, 2006 Are you able to post a pic next to a hermes please?
Guest Paul (MVP) Posted November 27, 2006 Report Posted November 27, 2006 Yup, i'll do that shortly... I assume by next to you are interested in the thickness of the thing? P
Guest nickcornaglia Posted November 27, 2006 Report Posted November 27, 2006 indeed side view.....my #1 concern when carrying PPCs. :)
Guest cng Posted November 27, 2006 Report Posted November 27, 2006 I'm interested in its speed comparison as well. I dont need numbers but the feel or overall responsiveness and quickness of device. When openning documents, going on Skype (if even possible) and the overclocked performance. Size is important but since I know how darn small the prophet is, this is surely my cup of tea. In Canada, I cant even afford HSDPA anyways, I might as well get something like this, if I save significantly. This, the M700 and Hermes are probably my final choices, unless WM6 SM comes out with Cavalier.
Guest tsutton Posted November 27, 2006 Report Posted November 27, 2006 Very nice... I like it even more than my Vario! Weight and size is my main concern.
Guest dave106 Posted November 27, 2006 Report Posted November 27, 2006 mini or micro SD? htc list mini on their site but everyone else says micro?!
Guest nickcornaglia Posted November 28, 2006 Report Posted November 28, 2006 I like the two little lights on the keyboard the show if you are in CAPS or FUNCTION mode.
Guest Pigo Posted November 28, 2006 Report Posted November 28, 2006 Am I seeing this wrong or did they take away the shiny chrome buttons on the production version? to bad, I kinda liked it. I was wondering how it compares to the Wizard. numbers do interest me haha. Love the feeling of progress when it comes to phones. Pigo
Guest sahli Posted November 28, 2006 Report Posted November 28, 2006 When in slideout keypad mode most of the devices today do not support cleartype view for some reason. Is this now solved with this device?
Guest Paul (MVP) Posted November 28, 2006 Report Posted November 28, 2006 Which buttons are you referring to Pigo? Sahli, you can turn on Cleartype in Landscape, but it doesn't look as good for hardware reasons on the screen. P
Guest Pigo Posted November 28, 2006 Report Posted November 28, 2006 green/red ok, start en soft-keys.... used to be bit chome-like. now they look silver. Pigo
Guest Paul (MVP) Posted November 28, 2006 Report Posted November 28, 2006 Yeah, they're silver now. P
Guest tsutton Posted November 28, 2006 Report Posted November 28, 2006 I like the two little lights on the keyboard the show if you are in CAPS or FUNCTION mode. Never noticed that... looks good!
Guest Paul (MVP) Posted November 28, 2006 Report Posted November 28, 2006 They are cool, what I am having trouble getting used to though is that the left soft key button on the keyboard has moved further right than on the Hermes, making it more difficult to hit with the left thumb. Sure i'll get used to it, but it's odd :) P
Guest Pigo Posted November 28, 2006 Report Posted November 28, 2006 the 2 lights indeed are great! and Dave106 .. it is micro SD enough talk! it should be in the stores now!!!! Pigo
Guest Paul (MVP) Posted November 28, 2006 Report Posted November 28, 2006 It's definitely MicroSD... with external access behind a rubber flap. P
Guest Paul (MVP) Posted November 28, 2006 Report Posted November 28, 2006 A size comparison Hermes v Herald... P
Guest Ingvarr Posted November 28, 2006 Report Posted November 28, 2006 Very nice device if you ask me! If HTC would stop cheapskating on SD slot and 2.5mm jack, it could've been even ideal. Also question is how much will it cost. Should be in Wizard range (and significantly cheaper then Hermes), otherwise it will lose one of strongest points.
Guest echo3 Posted November 28, 2006 Report Posted November 28, 2006 How does the screen compare with the P3300, does it have the same problems? When can we expect a review? Any news on which uk networks will be picking this up and when?
Guest nickcornaglia Posted November 28, 2006 Report Posted November 28, 2006 May not look it in the pic...but I bet that 1/4" or so difference in depth makes a big difference. True? A size comparison Hermes v Herald... P
Guest Paul (MVP) Posted November 28, 2006 Report Posted November 28, 2006 It makes a massive difference. The official difference in size is just under 5mm, but it's very noticeable. The device is still quite heavy at 160g v 176g... not sure why it's so heavy TBH :) I wish it looked 'a bit more special' too... :D P
Guest Paul (MVP) Posted November 28, 2006 Report Posted November 28, 2006 How does the screen compare with the P3300, does it have the same problems? When can we expect a review? Any news on which uk networks will be picking this up and when? The screen on the P3300 is shiny, unlike the matt finish on the P3300... so they're quite different. I prefer shiny personally, although it's a pig to take pics of :) Interestingly, like the P3300, 'backlight off' mode actually has the backlight on at a really low setting. Odd, but good for CamerAware :D P
Guest Ingvarr Posted November 28, 2006 Report Posted November 28, 2006 (edited) Shiny (glare) screens are better for contrast. Put a hand over screen - shadow from the hand will be a lot more noticeable on matte screen - on matte screen, the "black" color made a lot less "black" under outside lighting. This is not the case with shiny finish, because outside light is reflected, not dispersed. Hovewer you will need to tweak the screen position to eliminate distracting reflections :) I prefer shiny too. Btw, you can easely make the shiny screen into matte by applying the matte screen protector. Cant do the same with matte screen - matte layer will not go away. Edited November 28, 2006 by Ingvarr
