Guest foobarbaz Posted November 27, 2006 Report Posted November 27, 2006 Hi all, I recently got a new MDA Vario II / HTC TyTN running Windows Mobile 5, and use it to check my mail (currently using FlexMail). Ideally I want it to automatically check my mail every, say, 30 minutes. When it does this, it automatically fires up the GPRS connection. However, when it's finished checking the mail, it leaves the connection up. I'd like a way to achieve this, and it's possible I'm missing something! I'd expect to see either: * an option in the OS to shut off the GPRS connection after N seconds inactivity * an option in FlexMail to shut off the GPRS after it polls the mail box. Neither seem to be there, and I've currently resorted to using an SK Schema script (as suggested elsewhere in these fine forums). It just doesn't feel very... well, elegant. It could kill the GPRS mid-poll for example. So please - educate me. Is there a way to set a timeout on WM5 GPRS connections? Many thanks!

I can see where you're coming from but it's not a massive problem the connection being open really, as it's only transmitting or receiving when the phones sending...if that makes sense, it's not like WAP where it's always doing something, if you're not trying to send or receive anything(which if you were even if you were disconnected the phone would automatically reconnect) then it doesn't cost anything, or use much battery power(if any)...

That's encouraging - thanks. I'm not that worried about the data transfer as I have an "unlimited" package - but I did wonder about the effect it might have on battery life. Presumably it uses a separate radio? It's 3G/HSDPA (or, failing that, GPRS). I know very little about how those signals are handled on WM5...
Guest jimbouk Posted November 28, 2006 Report Posted November 28, 2006 The GPRS connection should use negligible power, if any, whilst connected but dormant. Its when it is active that it can drain the battery quite fast. If you use activesync over GPRS then it may keep firing up the connection - which will use a little power but not much - and as you are polling your mail service every 30 mins, it may as well stay connected.

Thanks for the advice guys, I'll give it a whirl and see how it works out. Now all I need is an update to Flexmail! :-)
