Guest dr who Posted June 7, 2006 Report Posted June 7, 2006 If, like me, you watched Sir David Attenborough doing his bit for the environment you now probably feel exceptionally guilty. You can somewhat salve your conscience by carbon balancing your life. I just recently invested in energy saving projects to offset the carbon generated by a flight I made and have had trees planted in Devon and Scotland to offset my travel and housing energy use. http://www.carbonneutral.com/shop/index.asp I feel very vituous now. Obviously not as good as not making CO2 in the first place but hopefully a step in the right direction.
Guest alsicole Posted June 7, 2006 Report Posted June 7, 2006 Well as long as we all do our bit! It's hard to avoid making carbion dioxide, what with breathing and all....
Guest sporkguy Posted June 7, 2006 Report Posted June 7, 2006 I fear that my kids (when I have em!) are going to be living in a much worse world than we are in right now when they grow up - something that I think concerns us all. Until big powers like the USA start doing their bit, there's not a whole lot of difference a small country like us can make unfortunately :)
Guest dr who Posted June 7, 2006 Report Posted June 7, 2006 That is a negative attitude though. Everything needs to start somewhere. So if I stop flying, then maybe some of my friends might stop flying, then maybe some of their friends, then there needs to be one less plane a day, etc, etc. Out of small acorns giant oaks grow!
Guest awarner (MVP) Posted June 7, 2006 Report Posted June 7, 2006 The problem is the cost of turning to "green energy" unfortunately most people will not want to pay more or in some cases can not physically afford to. Then you get the other crowd screaming that the government should pay for it all etc but where do they get their money from in the first place. It's more the big corperations that should be pumping their excessive profits back for the good of all.
Guest dr who Posted June 8, 2006 Report Posted June 8, 2006 I totally agree - the cost is prohibitive for many people. However I feel I should make, in my case at least, a relatively small sacrifice of about ?100 a year to salve my conscience. A bit like my donations to charity if the truth be told. The real difference could only be made my legislation from the government but who would elect a government who told you that you couldn't turn your TV on, or raised duty on fuel such that you could no longer drive your car or afford to fly. It would be nice to see corporations putting their hand in their pocket but while we have a stock market that will never happen.
