Guest pookiecheeks Posted August 11, 2006 Report Posted August 11, 2006 hello all, i travel daily along the a5, buckinghamshire section, and each new day brings yet more fresh roadkill. now my question is this. what happens to roadkill ? obviously crows and such like feed but what happens to the rest of the remains such as bones ? i can't imagine councils specially employing a person to clear such matter, but after a few days it vanishes so something obviously happens to it ? sorry if this question is morbid, but i was just wondering... pooks

Guest confucious Posted August 12, 2006 Report Posted August 12, 2006 Funny that! I was walking down the road the other day with a young lady and I sugested that I should walk on the road side as I didn't want to have to drag her bloodied corpse alng until I found a bin if she got hit by a car but she said it was OK as one of her friends is employed by the council to clear away roadkill!
Guest pd.ryder Posted August 12, 2006 Report Posted August 12, 2006 Most of the smaller carcasses are eaten by scavengers such as carrion crows, foxes and the like. Many are dragged off into the hedgerows and never seen again. However, in rural areas (and urban I guess), the Council are responsible for disposing of larger corpses such as badgers, foxes and deer due to their hazardous (and smelly) nature. Here endeth the lesson :)

Guest goochy1 Posted August 13, 2006 Report Posted August 13, 2006 Probably stuck to the wheel of a lorry and deposited slowly over the highways and byways of the UK.......... I saw that happen to a whole pigeon - it was just (for want of a better word) sat ontop of the wheel and everytime it went round it hit the pigeo and feathers gradually fell off. And as for where does the road kill go don't they disintegrate - cars hit them crushing them and moving them to the side then they sort of go into the soil?
Guest goochy1 Posted August 13, 2006 Report Posted August 13, 2006 Is employed by the council to clear away roadkill! To be honest i didn't think they did - i mean like pd.ryder they'd have to do it for bid creatures like badgers but for everyone?
