How about an idiots guide to sorting out your new Hermes?

Could someone who knows, take some time out to create some numbered steps of what's best to do to reduce the fat on the phone, make it quicker, more usable.. Maybe something like:

0) Install (what?) on your PC so you can send stuff to the phone (i dont wanna put those t-mobile CDs anywhere near my lovely fat-free work machine and my play machine powersupply is dead atm - how about some nice MS non-bloat solution?)

1) Unlock it with X and make the firmware flashable (why?)

2) Install the latest HTC roms (why?)

3) Get rid of your operator customisation (does this remove the ability to use operator services like web n walk?) (why?)

4) Buy a memory card and move all the apps to it

5) Install a variety of software from Paul's threads

Maybe its not so simple, and there isnt one route possible to satisfy all users. Perhaps a "things you can do with your shiny new hermes and why" thread would be an alternative. I'm reading all the forum threads I can, but they are usually quite skimpy on the "why" part - someone asks a question for whatever reason, and they are told the answer.. I'll keep trying to aggregate the info!
