Flexmail alternative?

As the title suggests, I want to enhance the built-in email/sms functionality but flexmail has got too many bugs and annoying habits so I've uninstalled it. Is anyone using anything else they would recommend? Basically just after message preview, marking as read when selected for a few seconds, just a little more control really.
