I can't imagine replacing my Vario II until something comes out with a similar form factor, losing nothing, and adding GPS and a VGA screen.

I actually use mine in landscape mode nearly all the time - I would be a lot less happy with it if I didn't have the keyboard.

I'd recommend the Vario II.

It has had isses, but the latest batches seem to be working fine, mine certainly is.

I was a bit doubtful about going for it at first, it seemed a lot bigger on paper than my MDA Compact, plus i was skeptical about the quality and imput speed of the keyboard. But the Vario II is a great piece of kit, and the keyboard is great for txting, emailing or typing of any kind.

Like Dr. Who I mainly use mine in landscape mode, my only niggle is that the stylus slot is on the right/bottom and I'm left handed. But only 1 in 10 people are left handed, and majority rules LOL.

The only improvements I could think of for the Vario III would be; Inbuilt GPS, Stylus slot on the left/top, 2.5mm or 3.5mm Headphone/headset port, More function buttons for the keyboard (e.g. Ctrl and Alt), and possibly a few more hardware buttons.

But I'm guessing it will be a year to 18 months til we see a Vario III, just in time for contract renewals :).

We're probably looking at getting some kind of sensible successor to the Hermes in about 6 months which would coincide with the time that operators will be shipping their first devices with Crossbow installed.

@randomelements, They probably will ship a crossbow handset, but crossbow isn't really WM6, if you look at the OS version its still only 5.2 :D so really its WM5SE and a lick on paint. Hell they might even produce a ROM upgrade for our hermes devices :D

The REAL successor for the hermes will be running Photon........

I've seen pics of the tornado, wizard and hermes running crossbow. TBH its NOT WM6 REALLY as its still based on Windows CE 5 (Windows CE 5.2 if you want to be picky :)). 'Photon' will be based on Windows CE 6 and be the TRUE sucessor to WM5.

So if you think of crossbow as WM5SE, then if you look back to WM2003.... most of the handsets got a WM2003SE upgrade. Hope its this same this time round :D

It's not too far out.... we've got intergrated gps, we have VGA screens, we already have 624Mhz processors(dell Axim), HSUPA cant be too far off now we have HSDPA, and some phones already have 3.2MP cameras with a REAL flash (k800), the HTC muse concept phone also had 4Gb of built in NAND flash memory.

Only thing a bit over ambitious is the battery life :)
