During my recent trawling of the internet I discovered over at mobymemory.com that they are now shipping 4Gb MiniSDs HERE! Not only that but they are priced at a vey reasonable £39.99... less than I paid for my 2GB MicroSD! Unfortunately I don't have a spare £39.99, so, enter mini_man, who kindly decided to purchase one for personal use and testing :)

You might be right in thinking, £39.99?! Thats far too cheap for a 4Gb MiniSD! Especially as a full size SD of the same capacity is £37.99. However mobymemory are offering them at a 40% launch discount so hurry!

Read on for more details and pictures confirming it works....[/teaser]

Unlike the various horror stories I've read on the internet about 4Gb MiniSD cards mysteriously losing half their capacity, this particular card works flawlessly in the C500, C600, MDA Vario and a card reader, the pictures below confirming that a full 4Gb (ok so its 3.89Gb) is available for use on the card. File transfer speed is apparently very good through the card reader purchased with the card from mobymemory.com. As its a SLC (single layer construction) card it is fully compatible with Windows Mobile devices unlike various other makes (Kingston being the main one) which use MLC (multi layer contruction) which can cause problems when writing large files. In addition this card is NOT one of the new SDHC card's which are incompatible with current devices :D

[EDIT: Pictures removed until I sort out the formatting :D ]

Has anyone actually TESTED a SDHC card yet? I have a sneaky suspicion they might actually work...

What is SDHC?

SD High Capacity (SDHC) card is the new SD™ memory card based on the SDA

2.00 specification, introduced by the SD Card Association. This new SDA 2.00

specification enables SD cards to reach higher capacities - 4GB-32GB*.

Because SDHC works differently then standard SD cards, this new format is not

backwards compatible with legacy SD format host devices.

More SDHC compatible devices are expected to be available in the second half of 2006.

To ensure compatibility, look for the SDHC logo on cards and host devices (cameras,

camcorders, etc.)

So no :)

I've tried 3 of these cards in my Palm Treo 750v and although they "work" they're not acceptable for me. They're unbelievably slow even in a PC. Using a USB 2 card reader they took over 6 hours to fill :D

Even more concerning is that every so often, totally randomly, all the files on these cards get corrupted and so needs re-formatting!! This happens in my device and in my PC. :)

I tried 2 from Mobymemory as they thought I must have a faulty one, but they were both the same, then got one off ebay where the seller claims it was 80 x speed (I think) but it was identical to the others! :D

im guessing its gonna be the same speed as a miniSD 2GB? im getting a MiniSD Ultra II 2GB for christmas to see how much faster it will be for recording videos and anything else. until they have a 4gb Ultra II Mini SD im not gonna get just the normal 4gb Mini.

and would u look at that... we both have the same avatar lol. i never noticed u having that one but judging by ur views u must have had it much longer than me

You won't notice much difference in the Ultra II's in your device, the bottle neck in speed normally comes from the card controller on the phone. I'll be interested in your restults tho

i sure hope ur wrong lol.

im gonna be so mad if i wasted $100 on something exactly the same, when i could have got the 4gb for maybe even less. well actually it wont be my money cuz im getting it for christmas. il still be mad if its the same tho.

so how sure are u that its the speed of the card controler on my device?

if it actually is then is there anyway at all to increase the speed of this? i may be comparing this to the wrong thing... but ive heard of increasing the speed of how fast dvd drives read and same with hardrives. would this be the same with card controler on my phone? id be very happy if one day i found a OmapClock for this lol

faulty? whats wrong with it.

I thought mine was faulty a first then when i popped it in the card reader to use it worked fine so then I realised it was formatted in fat32.

Did you try yours in a card reader? if it worked just format it in fat.
