Ok,

Been reading the forums for a long time and have come accross a few things several times but dont know what they are exactly and was hoping someone could clear it up for me. Ive got a Vario II btw.

- What is the ROM? Is it the firmware/software that the phone is running?

- What is the extended ROM?

- What is the Radio? I'm assuming this is the software side of things that actually runs the telephone application?

Thanks guys.

The ROM is the firmware if you like, its a general term for all the various sections. It basically tells the phone what it is and how to be a phone/pda.

The sections are:

  • IPL: This is the Inital Phase Loader, its function is to load the SPL, much like the BIOS on a PC
  • SPL (aka Bootloader): This is the Secondary Phase Loader and works in a similar way to NTLDR on windows computers, It is a small program which doesn't require an operating system to run but can load an operating system if desired, in this case, it loads windows mobile. It also performs other tasks such as ROM updates, command inputs via usb etc
  • Splash Screen 1: This is the very first screen you see when switching on your Vario II, the one where all the red writing comes up.
  • Splash Screen 2: After the red writing on the first screen, you'll notice it disappears and the screen 'flickers', it is now displaying the second splash screen.
  • Operating System: The main bit of the ROM. The Operating System is your way of interfacing with the various functions of the phone such as the camera, phone function etc.
  • Extended ROM: The Extended ROM is where all the operator customisation software is, eg, where the orange homescreen installer is etc.
  • Radio/GSM: The Radio/GSM is the bit that tells the phone how to be a phone and how to connect to the network and make calls etc, it also contains the SIM lock status and IMEI number.

Hope thats a bit clearer now :)
