Push email

My pal has a blackberry and he keeps telling me how amazing push email is.

I really would like to do this as well if possible. I've got a linux server at home on 24*7 that I can install software on if required to poll for messages at set intervals (if such software exists). Do I have to run exchange server to do it?

What are my options...not sure if t-mobile blackberry service can help? Find the whole thing quite a minefield - is it easy - is anyone else doing this with an IMAP mail provider?

Vario II

email provider is www.fastmail.fm (supports IMAP4)

Vario II on t-mobile web n walk (7.50 a month package)

thoughts appreciated

cheers

I'm really interested in the push button email. I just bought two new phones. I ideally need to view the emails (not all just headers with the option to view the rest) and send from quite a few email accounts all on the dreamhost server. I also have a Gmail account that I can access but would rather have it intergrated into Outlook along with the other email accounts.

The two phones I got was the SPV3100 for myself and the SonyEricsson M600i for my wife who needs to view an email account that is pop3 (like my ones) and a Yahoo account. She has ActiveSync Exchange or Blackberry options on hers?!?!?!)

Anyone know of any links for info and tutorials on this or can help directly would be VERY helpful.

I seriously think we need a tutorial on this (if there isn't already).

Sorry to sound moany, but I've been trying to work all this out and it's frustrating.

I have no idea, I'm confused....

Go to mail2web and sign up for a *free* exchange server account.

All the info you need is there, but in a nutshell, when you have created your account you can either auto forward from accounts that allow it (gmail does) or set the details for the email aggregator to collect email from other accounts. It will then be pushed to your compatible device either when received, or at intevals of your choosing.

Works a treat and is quite straight forward, I got it working very quickly and Im no tech wizard!

Best of luck, come back if you have further questions.

well....ignore the previous reply. I have got push email working now...

mail goes to my fastmail address and is auto forwarded to mail2web live which pushes it out via activesync to the vario....works fine....

only thing is when I reply on the vario the mail appears from mail2web.com rather than fastmail.fm.

How can I set the from address?

Pretty sure that you cannot change it (without paying anyway) It looks like a "condition" of using it for free. That was one of the reasons I stopped using it.

I went back to pull a while ago!

right...that figures....

just found that out actually...

looks like its 2 dollars a month or something for the upgrade....is there another way I wonder....I do like push.

You are right, you cannot send from other than the mail2web server unless you pay monthly. I get around it be just replying to any emails via a different account such as my gmail account.

If you use Webis Flexmail, mail from your Activesync inbox (where the push mail arrives) can be copied or moved to say your Gmail account and then replied to from there. It will then be sent via the gmail server rather than the mail2web server.

Its a workaround, but its easy and it works! Im just amazed that mail2web supply such a service for free at all.

I've been using emoze which seems to work quite well so far.

I have various pop3 accounts and my gmail one too all going through outlook and then pushed to my phone. The downside is that your PC needs to be one to receive the email to then push to your phone, but for me, that's not a problem.

Whatever you do. Don't be confused! :) It's way to early into the new year for that to happen...

Let me tell you about our solution, emoze

Emoze pushes wirelessly, in real time all "Outlook" content including emails, calendar, contacts and tasks directly onto the mobile device and vice versa keeping both your Mobile and PC inbox in sync.

So far so good?

Let me explain it in a little more detail. emoze consists of both a PC client & Mobile Client so there's always a wireless sync "connection" between them.

1. Follow this link to the emoze website CLICK HERE

2. Choose your device.

3. Follow the Download / Installation procedure

4. Let the Magic happen! Your outlook emails, contacts & calender on your device!

On a final note: The emoze service can work behind a corporate firewall or on your home desktop...

Ok, tried emoze, didn't like it, removed it (from both PC and M3100). Re-sync'ed with my home PC...

but... now have 2 email accounts - both with the same emails, one called "emoze" and one called "Outlook Email", where Outlook email is not listed in the account options anymore! Only emoze, plus the other acounts such as text and MMS (+ the others I have created).

Can I delete the emoze account - and will the Outlook account re-appear? How do I get back to before I installed emoze!!!!

I might add that emoze does work very well - very slick, I just didn't know that I had to leave my home PC running 24 hours a day...

So I've done the while mail2web thing, but now I've lost the ability to sync with my work exchange server whilst in the office. HELP!

hey you could set up a free exchange email with www.port88.org, with all the features that mail2web offers and you get to change the outgoing email address to that of your choice.

have fun

After this recommendation I tried it out and you're right, it does work quite well!

Unfortunately it absolutely kills my battery life - previously I had the phone set to pick up email every half-hour through imap but setting push email brings the battery life down from 10 hours (or so) to about 4.

Is this something you just have to live with for MS-style "push" (which isn't really push at all but really an IDLE implementation) or is it a problem with emoze? The reason I ask is that our sysadmin here is due to upgrade Exchange to 2003 this year and if the battery life will still be a problem I shan't bother to hassle him - if I get blackberry service instead I assume the battery usage would decrease dramatically.

The usage for the day was around 700k, so the actual transferred data can't be the problem.

Cheers

Geoff

I am trying to configure activesync for port88.org but when I go to Menu - Configure Server although I can change the server name on the first page I can't change the user name or domain on the second (both are in grey boxes). How do I change this information???????

EDIT - Ah, OK. You need to delete the existing server rather than edit it.

This could be down to my misunderstanding. I'd misread a FAQ on the emoze site (talking about sleep mode) and thought that meant that it won't pick up email when the phone's in standby mode (ie when you tap the power button on the phone) - this is wrong, it works fine when in standby.

Certainly in the three days since I posted this I've had battery life which is around normal or even better than it was on 30-minute IMAP polling.

On the other hand it may be down to a GPRS issue - the day it died so quickly it did seem to be reconnecting every time I looked at it, which (I assume) would cause a significant battery drain.
