Guest miniboot Posted January 7, 2007 Report Posted January 7, 2007 Does anyone know if the Nintendo Wii would work using the Vario II as a modem, by directly plugging the Wii into the phone and choosing wired modem option on the Wii's connection settings? I forgot to try it this weekend and won't be home to try for another 2 weeks, but the suspense is literally killing me. Moving to a flat without broadband soon and hoping to be able to use the phone to play online. Thanks, - Andrew
Guest Wozbacca Posted January 8, 2007 Report Posted January 8, 2007 if you're planning on using the 3g connection to play online i reckon you'd be wasting your time. even if it worked and you did get connected the latency would be terrible and make the games unplayable... i may be mistaken but i thought the Wii had a 10/100 ethernet port. how would you connect that to the phone directly?
Guest Suizid Posted January 8, 2007 Report Posted January 8, 2007 The Wii is 802.11g; the ethernet adaptor will be a seperate USB-based device (not yet released). It won't work as a modem as the Wii has no way of recognising a wireless modem - it's looking for a wireless access point.
Guest miniboot Posted January 9, 2007 Report Posted January 9, 2007 but there's a video on youtube of someone connecting their router via usb & choosing a 'wired' option from the wii's connection settings menu. i'm on my vario so I can't find it for a link right now but if you want to see it use the keywords wired wii usb in a youtube search to locate the vid The Wii is 802.11g; the ethernet adaptor will be a seperate USB-based device (not yet released). Guest Suizid Posted January 9, 2007 Report Posted January 9, 2007 (edited) Possibly through a third-party USB<->ethernet adaptor which luckily happens to have the same chipset as the official one will. The official ones should have been out at launch, but we're looking at February now. Edit: some DivX players (the KiSS range in particular) support USB<->Ethernet adaptors, but they're quite fussy as they have to know how to drive the thing. Edited January 9, 2007 by Suizid
Guest Suizid Posted January 11, 2007 Report Posted January 11, 2007 (edited) Just in case anybody is interested/checking this at some point in the future: Kinmax adaptor that apparently works: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?...82E16812203024R yes-asia.com also have the official ones shipping this week apparently. Edit: whoops, knew I was forgetting something: apparently the 3rd parties are bringing them out around now too. Edited January 11, 2007 by Suizid
Guest Rob.P Posted January 18, 2007 Report Posted January 18, 2007 even if it worked and you did get connected the latency would be terrible and make the games unplayable... In a good 3G signal area of about 3 bars I had no trouble playing World of Warcraft on my laptop via USB connection to phone (didn't think a bluetooth connection would cut it though, not cause of bandwidth but more due to BT stability).
Guest Suizid Posted January 20, 2007 Report Posted January 20, 2007 Not exactly a lag-critical game, though. Warcraft seems to hide your lag from you nicely, whereas console games like the forthcoming Wii titles won't be anywhere near as forgiving. That said, if they ensure the games aren't sending too much complex info - like they do with the current DS titles - then it might be ok...
Guest impossible Posted January 25, 2007 Report Posted January 25, 2007 I dont think it would work, the wii would have to know how to use the vario as a dialup account. When using wmodem on a pc, you ned to install the .inf file (driver) for windows to recognise it. I currently use my laptop and vario to connect to the internet using wmodem, then use some hack drivers to use the wifi card in my laptop to act as a AP and bridge it with the modem. This way I can get my Wii online. Imp
