How do you change between GPRS and WIFI use ?

Hi all,

I just got my first mobile 5 device (Eten M700) which works great but i keep banging myself over the head everytime i need to change connection between GPRS and Wifi.

Ok here is the deal. I am in Denmark and my provider doesn't have any data plan. I pay by the MB and that is almost 2 $/MBso i would like to have a controll over the trafic so i got GPRS Monitor from SPB.

My problem is that i have directPush on and when i get home i would like to use my wifi to surf so i turn it on then i try using IE. I can then see that it uses the WiFi BUT some small trafic goes thru the GPRS connection. I don't like that because i end up paying for something i didn't get.

This is how i set it up under:

Start->Settings->Connections->Connections->Advanced->Select Networks

Connect to internet :

My ISP

Connect to private network:

My Work network

Under Start->Settings->Connections->Network cards

My wifi network card is set up to use to connect to The Internet

I have installed this software :

http://www.gb-soft.cz/XDAII/product_gprs_tweak_wm5pe_en.htm

and that keeps my GPRS connection on all the time. Before i had that same problem occured. I have tried to disable GPRS Monitor i got the problem.

What i would like to accomplish is that directPush uses GPRS and all other internet stuff goes thru Wifi WHEN it's ON otherwise use of GPRS is ok. I guess this is what everybody wants.

Do i REALLY need to go thru all that hassle and change settings everytime just so i can use WiFi over GPRS ? Any 3rd party tools which can change these things ? How do you guys do this ?

I dont know the eten itself, but your fundamental problem is that directpush will only work over GPRS - apparently for security reasons. If you leave direct push on, then it will need to keep a GPRS connection open.

I use directpush when out and about, and then switch it off if I am home and likely to use wifi for anything - and do a send receive on my outlook account every now and then.

It's not an Eten issue it's just WM5 issue. How do you turn directpush off easily ?

I just don't get how everybody do this. This MUST be irritating for many people or is it really JUST me ????

In Comm Manager, just click the Direct Push button (middle one on right in portrait mode).

So its just push the com mgr button, one click and whilst you are there, you can turn wifi on with the button next to it.When you've finished with wifi, turn it off and directpush back on... although I tend to leave direct push off overnight (simply to save battery).

Don't have a Comm Manager. I have a Wireless Manager (i guess it's made by Eten) and it doesn't have a feature directpush turn on/off so i guess i have to live with that until better solutions are available.

Thanx

Is that really true? Eten have taken the Comm Manager out of the OS?

So you can only disable direct push by changing the sync settings in activesync to manual?

Yes that's correct. I haven't done it yet since i don't want to mess things up. There should be a registry some place that should be able to disable this but i dont't know it. Anyway i spend A LOT of time to change these stuff when i change my location.

I have heard that there should be a BUG in the HTC HERMES that doesn't prioritize WiFi over GPRS because if that worked as it should then i wouldn't need all of this because i could have both connection on an direct push on as well since direct push uses GPRS and i could use WiFi for MSN,Skype, IE and so on. It just strikes me how important this feature is and no one is talking about it. I just can't get it. I must be the only one that likes to keep things simple.

I'd strongly recommend Bandswitch which allows quick switching between 3G and GSM to conserve battery power, plus the ability to quickly turn the various GPRS connections on or off. And it's free!

The reason that WLAN won't work with Direct Push is that the WLAn radio goes off when the devcie is in standby, to conserve power. Whne the WLAN is on, and the device 'Awake' Dirct Push will use the WLAN connection. For some strange reason, after I tried a test WM6 ROM on my Trinity, Direct Push forced WLAN to come on every 10 minutes, when the phone radio was off, and if WLAN had been active prior to turning the phone/GPRS off :rolleyes:
